Élan Vital

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Élan vital is the vital force or impulse of life and stated by the philosopher, Bergson, as
a creative principle to be immanent in all organisms and responsible for evolution. In ruminating over enduring art, one is reminded of Nature’s influence on the choices the artist considers and his method of laying down the colors of life. As such, the oneness of Nature seems indubitably apparent in the process of life.

Poem Artwork

Élan Vital

From high above…

Nature's omniscient wisdom

forever stitches corners of life's tapestry

with Van Gogh autumns woven of amber and fire

rendering ageless brushstroke memories,

ever present,

ever past.

Just as Monet's emerald spring awaits its calling

knowing not of slumber long,

sun's awakening will forever recharge

anxious ponds of wonderment's struggle.

Just as fear sometimes destroys…

A palette of lilies patiently awaits

atop rippled anticipation below

framing banks of tall shielding grass,

preparing shaded respite for growth’s endless task.

And suddenly the shower of needles released on high

reminds canvases preparing far below

that even thorn-warriors defending petals red

must also embrace summer's tempest unfurled.

Lest we forget

Deep beneath a leaf's brush stroke of thanks

our roots bide time in silent evolution,

knowing storms above are but a mother's tears

nurturing impatient wisdom to survive.

Unlike Cézanne's Bend in Forest Road,

our summer's collage of flowering woods

must fend courageously the maternal warmth

to protect cooling nights from becoming frozen tears.

Remembering alas

Even the fittest fall as seedling

beneath a Miro's skeletal lattice

resting long till sun's tireless embrace

burns through another winter's naked cold.

If willing

The endless seasons will always awaken

the natural state of humankind’s restless,

rainbow of endless colors soaring

from heart to mind

from imagination to creation,

seeking to alight and affix.

Such is

the artist in us all.

Nature is the best landscaper, the master artist for us all. We seek to capture that beauty in colors when it peaks before the fall. Like your poem, we are driven, to replicate what we've seen. To show to others what we witnessed is really more than a dream.
