Reason's Voice

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

10/5/21 - philosophical anecdote from ancient history would serve the world well in our present day out-of-balance global mis-use of power. “…Thereupon many statesmen and philosophers came to Alexander with their congratulations, and he expected that Diogenes of Sinope also, who was tarrying in Corinth, would do likewise. But since that philosopher took not the slightest notice of Alexander, and continued to enjoy his leisure in the suburb Craneion, Alexander went in person to see him, and he found him lying in the sun. Diogenes raised himself up a little when he saw so many people coming towards him, and fixed his eyes upon Alexander. And when that monarch addressed him with greetings, and asked if he wanted anything, "Yes," said Diogenes, "stand a little out of my sun."[7] It is said that Alexander was so struck by this, and admired so much the haughtiness and grandeur of the man who had nothing but scorn for him, that he said to his followers, who were laughing and jesting about the philosopher as they went away, "But truly, if I were not Alexander, I wish I were Diogenes.”

Reason's Voice

It rises
Even as feet feel not
The groundswell

It knows

And It thinks to escape
Ahead of time
Where shadows advance
With fitful irregularity
Forging fearful signs
Some lurking in the fog
Others brazenly blocking light

Stay aware

For even as feet sense not
And shadows know only to hide
Rats and giants
Stalking beneath
Bird and branch
Morphing into reality at will
Satiating appetites' demand
Care not that reason exists

Still

It continues to rise
Steadying against shadowed walls
Prepared
Determined
For It understands
Even as It sometimes limps
The journey remains

It

Knows the heat of integrity

Defies dishonesty

And burns away specters of deceit

I was a bit confused until the last stanza where the clarity shines through as though Alexander stepped out of the way of the sun so that the light of truth could come shining through.

Just this morning, my brother sent me a propaganda piece from the fake Praeger University decrying the so-called "cancel culture" that is destroying us from the inside out. To that fear that many have, I say, "Bull shit!"

Perhaps reason still exists, but there is precious little of it in today's lying, hypocritical world of politics of the ego and the self. Reason has no longer much to do with it and has gotten left behind.
