Reason-Harmony-Truth

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Just a quiet exploration of philosophy's many choices regarding the power of an inquiry/request by way of thought, word or gesture in the seeking of truth. Many call it prayer. But to what or whom we direct such inquiry or request has divergent explanations, and as such, makes for challenging discourse. “We do not respect people's beliefs, we evaluate their reasons. If my reasons are good enough for believing what I believe, you will helplessly believe what I believe. I will give you my reasons and reasons are contagious. That is what it is to be a rational human being.” Sam Harris. (Image by Stephen K)

Reason-Harmony-Truth

To hate.
To reject.
To destroy.

To implore.
To worship.
To seek with fervent trust.

And so, it continues,
these crossroads of mind,
with imploration seldom thought
outside the worship of a God,
even as examination for some,
contemplation for others,
collectively and unknowingly seek
the same inner peace of silent resonance.

This personal spirit communication,
knowing something listened to
is often not heard,
seeks but to embrace simple entreaties,
pleading the quiet,
welcoming weary chaos,
consoling soul's guileless honesty.

How mesmeric this light,
seen while flinging open windows,
ushering in storm's tempest
balancing misread knowingness
into humble new questions.

These moments, created willingly,
bring choices made evident,
urging entreating of solution be heeded within,
as it serves its reverberations without.

For, is not meditation

but allowing resonance to seek one’s inner being,
resounding its quiet big bang
with no concern for source or object,
merely the wonder of nothingness,
the containment of everything?

Yet…

Prayers to acquire,
Prayers to relieve accountability,
Prayers by rote,
All sadly abound.

Few listen and hear their pleading’s answer

living recklessly within,
for like the lotus flower rooted in mud,
while blossoming over water,
genuine prayer knows not to exile negative affection
but to balance risk and reward.

Perhaps…

Such freedom from “want” comes not by formal effort,
but by allowing one's essence of harmony
to forever sustain the first and last echoes of truth.

The keyword near the end is "want." For those who pray, they always seem to "want" something. Particularly the something that they can get from their "God." As if God were the giver of all things like some kind of 24/365 Santa Claus for adults.

Unfortunately, we humans have emotions. Emotions often triggered by events, like death, close to us or hypothetically through outside sources manipulating us. The more we reject that control the better.

Simple meditation, just thinking in a quiet place, will calm those emotions and probably give us a better path to travel than some outside influence. Much better to be independent and freethinking than beholden and dependent.

I find this piece a lucid insight into how the writers mind works. Don't agree with Sam Harris though. As far as I'm concerned there are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true, and the other is to refuse to believe what is true. Thanks for sharing. r
