Turning Away

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Just making the effort to understand can often preempt the urge to retreat. Such is too much of our continuing malaise of home, work , play and politics. (Image by Getty)

Poem Artwork

Turning Away

Is to ignore
Happiness waiting for sorrow to fade
Contentment of candlelight waning
Courage spawned when facing death
Joy in witnessing dolphins speaking to be felt

Turning away
Is to assume
Sadness longs not for your frown
But enjoins love to bathe only in luxuriant waters
Where life’s threatening experiences

Become future lighthouses for warnings

Turning away are those…

Who reject paradox
Who only see obstacles as stop signs
Who forget the perpetual child's imagination

Is always fixed on go

For those who never turn away

Your words are touching, Odin! You state basic truths in your own words and they are beautiful!!

Love ya!

While still not clear what you mean exactly by "turning away," I will make an attempt from what I know. Many whose regular way of life, whether it be work or social was affected by the pandemic, have reflected on that life and not returned to it. In other words, they turned away from what they had been doing into other endeavors that were new and probably risky, but turned out to be better than what they had been doing.

What is interesting to me is why so many truck drivers have left the business. I think it may be because so many were getting quite elderly and just retired. Or, seeing that trucks were already on the road without a driver, decided to leave the business for some other occupation that was more secure and less stressful as long-haul truck driving can be.

There has been a shortage of truck drivers that I've seen filled by Sikh immigrants. Pandemic deaths may have hit truck drivers as a vulnerable population. We'll see.

Some effective imagery here ("life's threatening experiences // become future lighthouses for warnings"), to make the point that we should never turn away; but be as little children, whose imaginations never turn away, a hallmark of childhood worth preserving.
