Withering Pause

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It can be argued that one of the attributes of Nature that humans find difficult is the virtue of patience. Sadly, much of mankind has a hard time with perseverance.

Poem Artwork

Withering Pause

How rich the color was.

How faithful the trust.

Cooler days and frigid nights

Noted time was short.

Spritely shadows of fur

Scampered about,

Checking winter hiding places

For carefully placed nut stash,

While blustery air swirled layers of gold,

Yellow,

And occasional crumbling brown leaves,

As cover.

How intrepid blades were,

Braving the frosted ground,

Knowing a few hours of temperature rising

Would render perhaps the last drink of the season.

As fall would end,

Frigid winter would begin,

And dependable spring

Would always arrive

With daytime warmth of sun,

Nighttime cooled with darkness,

And the next morning’s warmed with the dawn.

Green blades withering,

Unlike the winter blues of many humans,

Cherishes well the thrill of anticipation,

When hibernation of grass returns

With rich green cover

Inviting oohs and aahs

For the well-cared-for blankets of velvety lawn

Awaiting the first of many

Hands lightly caressing the surface

With the sensuous touch of a barber’s

Newly finished brush cut.

I come away from this poem with a wish sensitive people surely have often: ‘Would that we could be more like the grass, the leaves, the trees, the animals with instinct.’ These lines hold the contrast of nature’s rhythm and dependability, to the erratic human way of instinctlessness, it seems. I like that there is a melody in here, the music of change and movement. Favorite lines: “….last drink of the season./“ and “…sensuous touch of a barber’s/Newly finished brush cut.” I know that touch, having done barber work and flat-tops :). P.S. — agree about patience…..it is an endangered species. ~~ djl

In days of uncertainty and instability Nature shows how patience and trust will
always win through…she never forgets…
A very enjoyable piece…

If only we humans would realize that nature is our greatest teacher and that its lessons abound and we are taught free of charge everyday. Unfortunately, we don't listen to those lessons of the perseverance and strength, and we completely disregard nature's perfect design or except the fact that we are responsible for tarnishing that design.

This is such a lovely write, not only for its skillful crafting and vivid imagery, but also for its recognition and celebration of a truth in plain sight.
