Something for Remembering

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- For me, having spent considerable time with my parents in nursing homes, I often found the experience very unpredictable, as if I were looking through a window witnessing an existence of life defying our normal perceptions, embracing instead their new world of expectation. (Image by pinterest)

Something for Remembering

Nursing homes know
arts and crafts
become valued visitors
some with smiles
some with hooded foreshadow

How tenuous
how earnest
mixed genders
sitting in circles
anxiously hooking
thick wool string
tendrils of perpetuity
threading dreams
shawls of protection
scarfs of statement
booties of tomorrow

crocheting eternity

Trees of life
now but withered branches
shedding leaves of time
by twig-like fingers
punctuating yesterday
with every hole by hole entry
every stitch by stitch attachment
allowing Age's changing colors
to float blithely
earthward
and beyond

Like observant wings on high
we can but gaze down upon
Time's swirling visions in slow motion
a vortex permitting but a glimpse
of our yet-to-come reality

For now

We ride the draft
peering safely from afar
as seasoned providence
weaves lessons into
what is still to come

Something long
Something wide
Something for remembering

It is good when a nursing home provides an activity, particularly a group activity where the poor, weakened individuals can still have some camaraderie while producing something useful. My experience, while always brief, in most nursing homes, was of loved ones who seemed to be drugged to keep them docile, just sitting out in the open, sleepy, and perhaps, daydreaming of things past that were pleasant.

Visiting your parents probably gave you a good idea of where you might be someday. Certainly not anywhere near, yet.

So sensitively and knowingly written…
I found stanza three particularly moving…
As Diana below says…it takes courage
to write about these things…I am appreciative
of your voice here…

Experience was ever present in this account. The brevity in lines, so full of truth and observance. Powerful familiarity of “mixed genders/sitting in circles,” and “tendrils of perpetuity,” — “…twig-like fingers”. All so encompassing of long-term care facilities. I also did time there, three years’ worth visiting my Mother and her Alzheimer’s. You capture well the “…vortex permitting but a glimpse/of our yet-to-come reality”. Takes courage to enter that vortex, and takes courage to write about it. ~~ djl
