Innocent Risk

As communicators, we sometimes fear rocking the boat of language. But retained innocence never fears such waters. (Image by Journal of Antiques and Collectibles)

Poem Artwork

Innocent Risk

Communication becoming…

To peer into an infant’s eyes
Is to peer into deep fathoms
Revealing a vast everything that was
Flooded by wellspring’s primordia reborn.

Wading ashore,
That place beyond the vacillation
Of a fog-shrouded shore,
Waits the language of one’s making.

Bonded by the unknown,
Its sound is mercurial,
Its images know little of their genesis.

To touch the invitation
Is to be seared and frozen,
Its aromatic essence,
That of history’s musty pages,
Yearning for future’s language of the unknown.

Finally

Its gustation blends
A thesaural palate with
Colors of incomparable bouquet,

Arpeggios beyond the key of anything,
Flowered fragrances yet to bloom,
And Time’s serene protection in shadowed space.

Such is the idiom of one’s creation,
One’s imagination,
The Berlitz of the mind,
Expression’s vocabulary

Becoming a living lexicon,
Even for those who cannot read.

The image starts the curiosity out right from the get-go. Never would have guessed it was an introduction into ‘language and communication.’ Wish I knew what the image says: I’m guessing it is ‘symbols as a language.’ Starting out with the infant’s eyes is a great beginning; for I agree that it is the universe looking back from those eyes (once they actually focus :) — I like the term “vast everything.” Language’s ‘sound’ being ‘mercurial’ is appropriate, and that is heard from the myriad of languages and dialects. Neat how this piece of yours contains such reference to music and vocabulary. I really like “thesaural palate.” And “Arpeggios beyond the key of anything.” That phrase is entirely unique to me and my mother would have enjoyed that one immensely. She taught 20 years of English and 40 years of piano. You would get an A++ in vocabulary, composition, and creative writing and many gold stars in sheet music if you were in her class. In fact, she would enjoy my having to look up so many of your vocabulary words (or that I actually DO look them up)….and today’s are: gustation, idiom and Berlitz. Wonderful subject, artfully handled. ~~ djl
