A Priceless Legacy

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

I find myself often considering the different ways one thinks of legacy. Often the direction of focus is toward material wealth passed on. And, as is often the case, the receivership approves of such a hand-me-down. And then there are those preferring instead the wealth of lessons taught and wisdom shared be the legacy. These are perhaps the more fortunate ones. (Image by pinterest)

A Priceless Legacy

Like a snow-covered road
Winding upward through
Lesson-markers of
Redwood and pine,
His time on this side
Remains an odyssey
Lovingly preserved.

Rock and rut obstacles
Remain for tomorrows yet dawned.
Destiny's beneath-the-surface hindrance
Reminds one will stumble again and again
Until watchfulness is learned.

Such roads become trailheads
Traversing inevitable
Paths narrow,
Climbing saps energy,
Air becomes thin.

Still…

Above the clouds beckons.

Such quiet guidance
He left behind,
Frozen footprints of wisdom
For me to discover
In my own season.

Who haven't nearing the end of life thought of these prospects? The many who think their life is much longer, particularly those suffering a car accident, stroke or heart attack.

Of course, there are those who pass nothing but their progeny. Some of, perhaps, dubious quality. But I think monetary gifts, while as you wrote, well accepted, take second place to passion down wisdom that will lash the ages.

We must preserve and treasures that legacies that are meaningful to each of us in our lives. Your poem offers an interesting take on this subject.

Glad you wrote that introduction. It set the pensive tone for this poetry. I found myself looking back to the image, for the “Above the clouds beckons,” which led to afterlife, which circled to legacy. I like “….tomorrows yet dawned” and “Until watchfulness is learned.” Your piece let me think about being a ‘fortunate one.’ My mother’s legacy was generosity, inclusiveness, silliness, literature. Da’s was music and resourcefulness. Poor in money, rich in values. Isn’t it neat that reading each other’s writing opens windows and doors nearly every time. ~~ djl
