Duplicitous Decisions

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Choices remain ours to make. Some pay attention. Others don’t. Such are times when mistakes seem so obvious, yet such epiphanies sometimes arrive too late to rectify. Everyone knows which choice is right, but... (Image by pinterest)

Duplicitous Decisions

To notice Nature
Is to know the tulip's heart asks for little
Its petals upon sundown
Folding shield upon shield
Over innocence

The sun
Also of patience
Remains willing to allow
Understands clouds of coolant
Nature's roiling emotion
Occasionally needs to vent

Humans
On the other hand
Know less of endurance
Too occupied with the now
Ignorant of perfection's infinite plan

Like a child's first steps
We wobble through life's forward movement
Paying little attention to personal mistakes and lessons
Becoming old

Duplicitous decisions still ruling

Unaware we may be endorsing habits of illusion
Wobbling still further
Swirling deeper
Until...

“Folding shield upon shield/ Over innocence” — beautiful language. Choice of image served well in setting up the tone of this piece. It was hard to stop studying that painting. “Too occupied with the now” truly resonates with me, as I concur with your lens focus on contemporary human behavior. I like your use of ‘wobble’ through life, a keen observation of even how too many humans are tending more and more towards numb wobbling. A little mind elixir to offset the truth of your poem here, I’m noticing young adults born in the mid-80’s appear to be turning towards nature, connectivity and inclusivity — from what I’m seeing. ~~ djl
