Preparing for Beginnings

The stages of life afford volumes of growth, always begging the big question: what’s next? (Painting by Jim Warren)

Preparing for Beginnings

How tenuous becomes the meaning of one’s life,
when like the yore of woolgathering,
one allows tufts of their being to be torn
by the barbs of challenge without learning,
where that seemingly endless journey through
the brier of competence training is trying to bring
an end to adolescence.

Oh, how conflicting the emotions can be during transition
when nostalgia and fear dominate such a person’s heart and mind,
where longing that the reckless days never end
often becomes the mantra of a continued encounter of thorns…

Adulthood

For many…
melancholy becomes the tears, pricks, and punctures
of the interim journey.

For others…
embracing suffering as lessons
becomes a gift the fortunate have been waiting for.

The impoverished deny distress and opt instead
to continue attachment to the misery of the past,
embracing endless wandering of the soul’s need to mature,
to realize its full potential,
to arrive at that authentic self of one’s being.

Then

Independence comes knocking,
offering a creative, serenity,
allowing one’s inner being a new
and hopeful valley of rest,
where one willingly allows woolgathering
to be what it is,
to smilingly shed surface armor
knowing one’s self-realization
has arrived at the gates of unconditional love
for self and others,
friendship and care for the strangest of strangers.

The glorious shades of red and pink in an early morning sunrise
Imbue the existence of creation with Nature’s warmth.

The light has been ignited
The flame of wisdom beckons
Peace of mind is yours

One listens to the breath
Knowing life isn’t over
Perhaps it’s just preparing
For what is not known

The next beginning

You often write about the stages of life. In this case, coming to terms with your life at the end of its long journey with all that you've learned. We are born alone and we die alone, but those of us who are content alone, like you and I and can reach out to others unconditionally, have reached the epitome of what life is all about.

I don't think of starting over as intact with my so-called soul, but all of the minerals that remain after my creation, will certainly start new creations on this earth before it finally burns up in the sun and other new creations will have begun.

The search for the "authentic self" can be a harrowing experience, as well delineated in this incisive poem. I like the sense of hope that pervades at the end, the challenge of new beginnings.
