Alternate Foundations

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Complacency of living often leads to a hard, impenetrable underpinning of hopelessness. A realistic contemplative philosophy can often relieve such feelings of futility…especially when derived from silent meditation… and a little bit of Descartes.

Alternate Foundations

Forever gone are the voices of fearless trust

and long gone are the once cleansing rains

that now muddy the foundation.

Even as we long for the innocence of heroic action,

framed honors were not meant to be for some,

and there remains only the collage of experience to hang on the wall.

So suggest some of life’s learned essential lessons,

while others scatter the landscape with agony,

trying desperately to escape.

Still, for others…

death be the only sanctuary from the insanity of fear.

Yet…

What if someone's truth be a place locked safely away

beneath some naked honesty known only by one’s conscience?

For those who dare to seek out that place,

where stripped away layers of protection,

saturated with the tears of elusive answers

venture alongside nature's compass,

might there be yet another unexpected direction,

if one dares?

Perhaps…

That direction seen only by those whose naked past

is vivified by wanderlust,

where the adventure of life continues

after shedding mud-caked insulation.

Might such an epiphany

cause one to leap with abandonment

from the twisted abyss into another time?

What drives us to leave behind the habit of place and protection

to run, walk, and if necessary, once again

ultimately crawl through barbed spirals of isolation

into battlefields of unknown exposure?

Is it enigmatic, this naked home we seek,

without assumed walls and roof

or fortified landscape?

Is home only beneath yesterday’s foundations

where a bare and vulnerable essence beckons one to stay?

And if one’s alternate home be the purpose of the journey

what validation allows entry?

Those with answers must now ask more questions

Cogito, ergo sum

I have been delving into the foundations of my family heritage where secrets were probably kept from discussion because I never heard anything about them. But I have found recently that those that I've known in my lifetime have often left the path of what was right for what was exciting at the time. Nothing to write the award-winning Pulitzer novel, but enough to make one contemplate one's own.

I'm finding revelation and enjoyment out of digging down into my life and finding secrets to reveal.

I love your way of writing about an issue on your mind but not getting too personal with it. The kind of stance a teacher has to take to not be judged by his or her students.

"What if someone's truth be a place locked safely away
beneath some naked honesty known only by one's conscience."

I think this question is the key to the entire poem. Although truth be universal, transcending the individual, one's own truth, namely how we interpret and internalize our understanding of truth, sets us on the path. We cannot escape the obligations of what we choose to believe.

Decartes famous epithet, cogito ergo sum, is fine, so far as it goes, but it doesn't go far enough. It isn't enough to think and to exist. We must transcend our limited existence into the greater, the more universal Self.
