Imprisoning Volition

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

After reading Edward Phillips inspiring essay on “Enlightenment” I was primed to write this. Whether following the lead up to the never-ending saga of the Jan 6th uprising, or the en masse quest by educated graduates for money and power,
what we witness in many cases is a loss of independence and critical thinking. (image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Imprisoning Volition

It starts simple enough,

One surrendering identity to follow,

Like a simple quail after a lead bird,

Eventually becoming but dust atop

The polished majesty of independence.

How innocuous so many become,

Growing smaller and smaller

In the shadow of progress

Until becoming the look of but one creature,

A ghostly swirl of fragments

In the land of sameness.

Perhaps…

Were their insulation of cowardice disturbed,

The minions would awaken,

Akin to the kicking of a rock

To get the worms moving,

Hating as they do

The light

Of day.

Of course…

Such neophytes become the prey

Of yet a greater sameness.

Unlike the swooping and intricately designed patterns

Of a murmuration of starlings,

Humans will, in a much less beautiful way,

Surrender their independence

For the joyless sense of rote behavior,

Going with the crowd,

Obviating the act of connection with other beings,

Bowing instead to blind joining en mass,

Forfeiting the privilege of prerogative.

For as sentient beings,

We have a choice between fraudulence

And being true to one’s own personality, values and spirit.

To be or not to be

Remains the question.

One of the most powerful prosetry pieces that I've seen you write. Most seem to learn early on from repetition, who they will follow and they tend to follow because it provides them with less danger in their lives even though when they get involved in mass hysteria like January 6 their leaders take them into great danger like lemmings to their death in the sea.

Higher education has been taken over by moneychangers, the accountants. Where once, a "liberal" education meant that one was well educated in math, science, literature and history (unfortunately, mostly Western, Judeo-Christian history), today, the professions rule and the greatest major of all that started it all, philosophy, is cheapened and ignored.

Like my doctoral advisor told me, "Medical doctors are just trained technicians." Most of the professions are that way. Their graduates trained and groomed to certain behaviors that have nothing to do with critical thinking and everything to do with making money.

as they say, it's easier to follow the crowd and takes a lot of guts to be your own and independent. another magnificent piece, Odin. thank you.
