Sun-setting

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

For humans, unconditional love versus love that seeks something in return are behaviors readily distinguishable. But few think about Nature’s many gifts. The sun is worthy of being personified, as it is one great essence of genuine unconditional love, asking for nothing in return.

Poem Artwork

Sun-setting

As perhaps one of the most enduring loves of my life,

Your intimacy visiting me each day

With warm light lingering as it does,

Creates ancestral shade amidst the tall redwoods of California,

Silhouettes of stalwart rocks reaching for the skies along the Oregon coast,

And the foreshadowing of tomorrow

Stretching across roofs of New York.

As the fading redness of your daily farewell

Glides away from us in slow withdrawal,

And shadows invade the abodes of the living,

Darkening the indoor confines,

Occupied or empty,

Some will turn on a lamp,

Or a candle.

Still others,

Smitten by your ever-faithful love,

Will step to the window of their gratitude,

Savor your fleeting radiance,

And find themselves motionless,

Stunned by the beauty of your receding glow.

A caring mother of life about to sleep,

Who’s warm after-glow lingers on the horizon,

Reminding us with her bowing

Just how much we mean to her.

I agree with Audrine, tremendously beautiful. Reading it was like a Ken Burns slow sweep over the scenes and locations. Very intimate and respectful…”And shadows invade the abodes of the living,” and “A caring mother of life about to sleep” — reverent and beautiful in the same vision. ~~ djl

Such a fine poem in tribute to the sunsets that we can enjoy (almost) every day. My condo faces west and the autumn sunsets here in Miami are truly magnificent. Perhaps that is why I have also written a number of poems on sunsets. How we never, and never will, get tired of them.

A love affair of unconditional nature. Especially the way you describe the sun setting.

Early peoples and most early civilizations like the Egyptians, Mayans and Druids to name only three, all worshiped the sun as a life force that was dependable. All know that on a very cool morning being able to be in the sun is a very warming and wonderful feeling.

We are beginning to learn that the sun is not just such a pleasurable quiet setting, but our life force as we move on into the future. More so than ever before.
