To Love Sadness

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To allow the company of love to walk side by side with the often-obstreperous emotion of sadness eventually provides the solace so needed by this degenerative feeling. “Love is love and the livingness of that must be known before any word can be used to describe it, for the true emanation of love is word-less.”
Serge Benhayon Esoteric & Exoteric Philosophy, p 388

Poem Artwork

To Love Sadness

Sadness moves its dreariness

From personal identity

To world awareness,

 Its gait that of hesitation

As love’s embrace reaches out.

How unpredicted this sorrow appears.

With slumped shoulders

Like a wilting bloom,

Eye slits watery

Like dew drops seeping,

Gravity’s Downward pull of body

Like waning strength of a flower’s stem,

Melancholy weighs heavily,

Fearful of more rear-view mirror storms.

How willingly gloom accepts the night,

Darkness being its trusted friend,

Accepting its distorted reactions,

Knowing slumbering rest cradles its grief,

Understanding the exhaustion

Of heart and mind combatting

The desolation confronting consciousness.

Upon wakefulness,

Sadness spreads its outward reach,

Unexpectedly encountering

A warm embrace,

An unconditional willingness,

An acceptance of misery

As the tears of compassion

Merge with those of unhappiness,

Allowing the light and warmth

Of compassion’s embrace to encourage.

Love wishing to heal despondency

Is oh so authentic,

For such an emotion,

Moving about with its essence,

Remains without boundaries,

Without qualifying admittance.

Devotion is there for the taking,

Rejecting depression as

A redoubtable foe,

An inveterate caregiver.

For…

When challenged by life’s sadness,

Tireless love

Continues creation’s indomitable mission.

It's so odd that in our deepest sorrow we often find the offering of joy. Lovely poem, Odin. Soul felt.

Love . . . remains without boundaries, without qualifying admittance.

After your intense description of sadness with its "outward reach", you conclude with the word that conquers all, the presence of love.

Down through history misery loves company. Sorrow and misery sparks creativity. There are more tragedies than lovely successes in literature, stage and movies. Songwriters and poets frame their work on loss and sorrow. You are in good company with some of the greatest of all time.

But I will agree, as far as women go, there is no reason or rhyme. Some will stick to you to the end and some will flee at whim's bend. I think your poem is telling us that you're getting comfortable being sad, miserable and lonely.

You've conjured good images to support your premise. Everyone I've ever known has dealt with sadness. Unhappiness. Heartache. Grieving. Bitterness. Anguish. Despondence. No one escapes these things. No one is immune. I've heard it said that creative people who feel deeply, who love deeply, are destined to suffer deeply. Seems life's greatest lessons are learned at the worst times, and usually from our worst mistakes. Each of our lives could be construed as a mirror. And what creative thinkers think into the mirror, is reflected back to them. There were times, in my long past, that I despised what I saw. Seems my worst mistakes happened when I was so preoccupied with myself, and what I was accomplishing, that I'd become oblivious to the needs of those closest to me. That lesson, the sadness and misery of it, reoriented my thinking. I wish you well. Peace.... r

Odin, your choice of image and the Serge Benhayon excerpt show an impeccable pairing of those choices and this writing of yours. Don’t know which came first, but they swirl into each other in their essence. I can’t recollect encountering a written description of any portrayal of love and sadness that matches the substance of what you have written here. I can identify with this piece 100%; and it wraps a soft blanket around this state of being, ‘love, sadness, loss, missing’ in comfort instead of resentment. I love that feature. The effective way these words and their arrangement caused me to physically wilt along with the stems and petals was tremendous. Using the flower dissolve was brilliant, the vibrance turning brown. And yes, this sadness being world empathy, not just personal — exquisite. Apprehension of emotional rear-view mirror storms is plenty good, too, as is the presence of distorted feelings of nighttime, the haunt of chain-thinking, stealing away sleep. My favorite line is: “Love wishing to heal despondency” for that one rang true with me….when the ache of sadness is ‘because’ of love’s presence in all that absentness. Splendid writing, this. ~~ djl
