Crowded Aloneness

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- Learning the pain of loneliness and the peace of solitude can be a lifelong journey for many. Some of us stumble into a way station or several along the way to rest. We’re the fortunate ones. (Image by Hippe)

Poem Artwork

Crowded Aloneness

To stand alone
Among the crowds
Is to know a Manhattan subway platform

How quickly the stale air
Becomes infiltrated with
Wafts of
Perfume
Hotdogs
Body odor
And the ubiquitous mustard pretzel

People everywhere
Rushing uptown
Downtown
Cross-town

To be lonely
In the mayhem of humanity
Makes melancholy run rampant

To squeeze into a rush-hour train
Is to condense platform disturbance
Into compression-depression

One’s stop can’t come fast enough
Shoulder to shoulder
Sneezing
Coughing
Belching
Flatulence
Settles in like dumpster hell

Yet…

Upon reaching “my stop”
The anxious race up to street level is quick
Down the sidewalks
Bounding the stairs of a brownstone
Into the sanctity of my sanctuary

On with the burner
Teakettle heating
Coffee to brew
Novel’s chapter to edit
Attempts at peace

Bedtime comes slow most nights
They say a little pot
Goes a long way
Weed is of no interest to me
As my nightmares await

A ceiling spider provides
Solace for the empty heart
The eight-legged life perfectly satisfied
Hanging from the corner of its web
Awaiting company
That inevitably obliges its need

To sleep and wake
To check the web’s weave
To see the spider gone on reconnaissance
Allows a smile to envelop my face

Such a friend
This roommate of ancient ancestry
Asks for so little
Yet seems to have so much
As I’m told I do
But…

My humble asking for solace
To comfort my ownership of that
Which can’t be bought
Is unanswered

Such were the days of acquiring awareness
Days now of thanks and appreciation
Knowing wisdom is the triumph
Of knowledge and experience
Being given its impactful run
Unabated.

A soulful look at the subject, Odin. Solitude is wonderful but loneliness is so sad. Beautiful poem. Loneliness is even sadder when you are among family and friends but you are alone.

I've never experienced the New York subway, but thanks to this eloquent poetry I can now smell it.

While I hate the overused word, "impact," I found this poem of yours very revealing and appealing. The story of how one in a crowd can be lonely. In this case, the subway being a rather claustrophobic time with many neatly described annoyances requiring escape as soon as possible.

And the nice way you described your roommate, the spider, and its activities. Something you do so well from your knowledge and experience.

Having lived in New York for a few years and later had NY as a home base (before Miami), I well know the rush of the subway that you eloquently describe here. Enjoyed.

Well, this feels to me like a stunning 'self-portrait,' for it reads as a remarkable likeness to what I perceive as your self-character reveal emerging from poetry you share. A signature fragrance, a masterful ability to express, a color-filled pallet of language, a talent and skill in painting murals with your words. I find this to be a portraiture of sensitivity from a voice of one who has urban wisdom and wistfulness in the same sweep....rampant melancholy and dumpster hell...mayhem of humanity, "Solace for the empty heart," also --thanks and appreciation in the midst of 'that which can't be bought.' Striking content in this, Odin. ~~ djl
