The Tome's Demise

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Reading anything longer than a tweet nowadays has become the punch line of many a comedian. But, is it truly worth laughing about? Proust and David Foster Wallace are not laughing. (Image by bookaglow.net)

Poem Artwork

The Tome’s Demise

How vigil did it live its life

This context of pure love

Of no detail unturned

No shorthand of thought

Just thorough storytelling at length

How glib the reader of tweets and other SMPs

Where punctuation

Forethought

Consequence

And responsibility

Are held hostage by narcissism.

How sad this century of tome’s final resting place

Where only a few books of lasting value

Have found peace at last

Even as teen-arousal novels still abound

Where obsessive adult proclivity of flesh carries on

At the freshly turned earth

Tomb’s essence is lowered

Finding grace at last

As the dirt of earth’s nourishment

Is scattered atop the covers of lasting words

Assuring freedom from a shunned existence

Protection of lasting memories

Tomes have enhanced

Long live the tome

Long remember the loss

As I read this stanza it made me think of poets and their poetry…

"Where punctuation
Forethought
Consequence
And responsibility
Are held hostage by narcissism."

Tomes are still around, but if they are long-winded rather than get to the point more quickly, I can see why they might be forgotten. There has to be something, something other than just stream of consciousness, to hold a reader's attention in a highly distracting world. I guess why I find myself just catching news headlines and rarely ever going back and getting any detail on the news because it is coming so fast and so much, that I can't read it all. Would rather spend more time writing overly long short stories rather than flash fiction.

You are so right on this one. Long gone the days when one would snuggle up to a tome of Tolstoy and Dostoievski and the adventures of Tristam Shandy, not to mention to lengthy tomes of Dickens; but how the world is less enriched for the lack of taking part in the pleasure of reading even long book that you wish would never end.
