Addiction to Beginnings

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To know someone who is addicted to beginnings is to know a being who may be choosing to avoid the risk that rewards of sustainment and completion is necessary for beginnings of another kind to be nurtured with strength. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Addiction to Beginnings

What is this compulsion,

This avoidance of challenge,

The fleeing from obstacles of growth,

Never allowing the apex to become?

Might it be…

Lack of focused practice

Of what is needed?

The aggressive slide back to another beginning

May be but the fear of succeeding,

The anticipated comfort of sympathy,

The never having to admit defeat,

The overwhelming lure to tranquilize.

How pitiful the many who avert

The daring of their worth,

Regardless of sticks and stones of discouragement,

Entrust desertion guarantees an undertow

Of self-loathing.

Often…

To obviate respect for a commitment

May represent the primary obstacle

In the erosion of one’s extra effort,

That reserve of tenacity we all possess

For a relationship’s beginning

To ultimately stand atop the citadel

Of sustained responsibility and self-respect.

You are so right, Odin. Beginnings only exist to lead us to the center or completion. Wonderful poem.

I have an advantage knowing the circumstances surrounding your posting. Yes, there are those that constantly change venues while burning the bridges behind them. Fearful that those memories will catch up with them someday.

On the other hand, using the foibles of misspent youth leading to fruition of long struggle into the light of success and accomplishment--even wisdom.

I guess that's a matter of perspective. If you have found the one you can be one with or if you have found the one who makes relationship a tug of war. I know where I would want to stay and where I would want to leave. Knowing first hand that opposites does not attract, I would say that finding the one who is just like you is the way to quit the addiction of new beginnings. Nicely written.

What you write is true, there is a lure to the experience of beginnings that is not only intoxicating but also addicting, more so even in the dismal light of endings with their sense of finality and loss. Well conceived and executed.
