Weeding the Word Garden

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Yes, for those of us who write daily, there is a need to maintain a word garden’s vocabulary and avoid overused cliches of laziness.

Poem Artwork

Weeding the Word Garden

Beneath a canopy of literary protection,

The trees judiciously shade part of the day,

Sun the early hours.

Habitual turning of the enriched pages of nourishment

And furrowing channels of maintenance

Unearths blossoming new arrivals,

Word-bloomings that heretofore were unknown

To the word cultural archives,

Word-roots in continual earth turning,

Urging more mind irrigation,

While this year’s annuals

Of fresh verbs,

Decorative adjectives,

And inordinate nouns,

Elbow for more room to gain attention.

After a prolonged period of literary drought,

Meme weeds continue their battle for territorial dominance

Against the “bop” or “banger” variety of word garden mayhem,

Squeezing out the room taken by “catfish” spies

Who’ve caught the afternoon breezes

Just long enough to float their slang-renegades over from

Their previous underground domicile,

Vacant-yard-Lenny’s ever-pollinating weed emporium

Exercising total disregard for

Its garden-ignorant-“deadass” adjectives and adverbs

That roil in chaotic growth and irresponsible rogue-travel

To cared-for word sanctuaries,

That place where hopeful writers toil

To remain innocuous among those who would

Sprinkle their acidic seedlings of coinages

Contaminating the used lexiconic-mulch

Readying a seasonal cultivating period

For refreshing renewal of linguistic harvest.

Writers stare blankly at their dwindling influence,

Their garden of words heroically battling

For staying power amid the ubiquitous overpowering,

Pulp-enriched, cancerous infestation of grammatically wrong,

Misspelled and over-abbreviated language of the rapidly becoming

Miscreants of literature’s healthy consumption and digestion.

I had to laugh several times through this one, some real gems from what we have to draw from without falling into overuse, or as you say cliche. It's a tough job in the end.
