Poem Artwork

 Dreams

Tonight

Heavy eyelids succumb to fluttering first,
Becoming rain showers of thought,
Meandering tributaries,
And finally
A river to forge,
Footholds' precarious words
Wanting only to afford pathway
To mind's quieter listening banks.

Yesterday

Bridges ceased to be,
Beneath which
Mud and leaves congealed,
Finding haven as residue
Memories of glorious times,
Now but directionless currents
Sweeping out to sea.

Today

The clock of sun and moon continues
Unraveling the flow of repeated intervals,

Like a fraying tale's hem,
Where no amount of tying
Or untying
Can secure
An evolving destiny.

Night remains

Respite for some,
A merciless river of time for others,
Its purpose meandering downstream,
Allowing daylight minutes to be jettisoned,
While succumbing to night hours' cumulative weight
Submerging beneath one's pillow,

Like a vessel’s anchor finding purchase…

For now.

I read your poem several times and, each time, felt that I, too, was flowing with that mysterious river of consciousness, from day to night to waking again. We want to understand, to know the mystery of our sleep and dreaming, but the best of it seems to be to simply let ourselves flow with the mystery. What an interesting and beautiful poem!

You have so well described in the, sometimes repeating, sometimes inspiring, sometimes frightening and sometimes, revealing nature of dreams. They can be bizarre and otherworldly. They can be, in my case, the source of creativity for story writing. Some great similes for this behavior in your poem.

It is my hope every morning that I have slept well and dreamed well, "like a vessel's anchor finding purchase…"

If great poetry begins with a unique collaboration of words,
that stir the mind and soul, you are guilty of cultivating
passions known only to those of us who have an appreciation for
talent that can be spotted from a great distance. Superb!

Some fine imagery here to make your point: "Like a fraying tale's hem."
Another: Night as "a merciless river of time." That struck a bell that reverberates. Excellent.
