Tiny Sepulchers

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

So many revelations have been found when opening a safety deposit box of the deceased. One is reminded of the way pharaohs were tucked away with their riches.

Poem Artwork

Tiny Sepulchers

Behind the safe’s elaborate door

Rows and rows of small, locked metal boxes

A sprawling cemetery of secrets and wealth entombed

A seldom visited resting-place

Family remains to await resurrection

By the visit of usually but one with permission

To reveal the magical moment

A safety-deposit box key so simple

Unlocking the often complex burial

Often covered by layers of legal white sheets

A papered shroud needing removal

To reveal the preserved riches

By an unlocking tool-identity without name

A number of designation

Embossed atop the opener

Will there be…

Mementos of memory?

Carefree nothings for smiles?

Perhaps a lock of hair for weeping?

A keepsake of no value

All for the trusted party to carry on?

Oh…

How blinding the sparkles of forsaken wealth

The faceted clearness of prosperous purity

Made untouchable by memories of dishonestly

The patriarch remaining who and what he was

The fear of touching contents

Admonishing damp fingers to tremble

Of note…

The gold and silver face

Of the deceased pocket watch stares up

Time recorded

As he fell

23 past 2

Irony

Immortalized

As contempt’s lasting reminder

Your words hit home, Odin! I remember going with my parents to examine certain stocks. I was so very young and found it boring as I sat off somewhere in that room. Nevertheless, You came back with quite an ending! Awesome!!

Love ya!

Skillful description of this act, Odin. I resonate with it all, having been that “..one with permission”. Just like you say, “….damp fingers to tremble” — that is exactly how it is! It feels invasive, invitation to invasion of privacy. Yes. “A sprawling cemetery of secrets….”. Hands down this is alive with the feeling. “How blinding the sparkles of forsaken wealth” carries much in that line. “…blinding the sparkles…” just puts the diamonds in our eyes, even if the sparkles are deeds to a house, ownership papers of the winning horse, or a gum machine ring given by the child when she was just six because that exact ‘sparkle’ was the moment’s shining child eyes now sagged and middle-aged. But I highlight as most expansive “Made untouchable by memories of dishonesty” {stowaway letter l in dishonesty}. Finishing with the watch was a gasp of brilliant reveal. Perfect picture of the safe deposit boxes — tombs of fortune, folly or fate. ~~ djl

I have no experience with safe deposit boxes and only know from what I have seen in the movies, or what I could guess. So, your poem was something of a revelation to me. Most interesting.
