Enduring Love’s Unknowns
Yes…
For many,
There comes a time
When casting off life’s all-weather insulation
One would not be burdened
By the extra weight of protective insurance
Heart and mind having found purchase
With a grip that seems destiny’s answer
Letting integrity breathe honestly again
Moving about with free climbing ease.
But then a sudden storm
Left nowhere to grip
Nowhere to secure
The safety of passion’s protection
Against sudden flash flooding of rueful tears.
How strange to find
Scaling a not-yet-identified challenge
Is to know freedom
To honor the experience insuring one’s self-worth
Trusting one’s being
Naked as it is
Cold and damp
As it is likely to become
Again.
How secure the cover once may have been
How warm yesterday’s tomorrow used to be.
Growing up, I remember not needing the comfort of the belonging to a club, clique, or going steady because I had my twin brother and a family that was very supporting, basically giving me independence. So when I left for college at 18, with my twin brother trailing behind, I was fully prepared to live alone. When I was paralyzed at 20, I was fortunate to get back to school within 10 months, nearly normal. And able to fend for myself, totally, alone, for 30 years. But there came a time, 30 years ago, when I could no longer go it alone, solo. The best thing I ever did, was hire help, and not fall back on my family, burdening them.
