Separate Tables en Masse

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Aloneness is rapidly becoming the norm. Some public places are more private than public, a gathering surrounding for sadness. Regardless of gender, some would argue that’s not how it’s supposed to be.

Poem Artwork

Separate Tables en Masse

Numerous tables
An installation of “Don't touch" peoples

Who will dare my eyes peer into
Their emptiness of yesterday
Their frozen tomorrow waiting out today

Who will dare let breathe their heart
Without fear
Without prejudice?

Who will lift up their face and see

Sadly…

Another lonely face they'll likely ignore?

So true, for all of the electronic means of communications, there are indeed a lot of lonely people in the world.

It is a sad reality in modern society, that people can die of loneliness in the middle of a city. Honest, trustworthy, life-giving connections with others are getting more and more difficult to find. Sometimes though, as I've learned in my own life, you have to stand alone for a season, just to make sure you still can. A thoughtful insight. Peace.... rlc

I can relate to this. I try to always meet eyes of the people I see and give a smile. You never know who's life you will literally save or at least make better for a while. But somedays I feel like I want to sink into oblivion and not be seen by anyone, because I simply don't have the energy to give of me. I wonder if this isn't a symptom of our stressed lifestyle as well, which is making us isolated from people because of us simply not having the time to squeese in a meeting with friends because of calendars don't line up? No matter what the cause is, it is sad, because we are meant to live in packs, us humans. Without that pack we feel like outcasts.
Great piece. It is more readily available than the others I have read. And don't get me wrong. I love them as well.

A striking piece from you, Odin, as I see it having a tinge of of something more than sadness that is ‘personal,’ a group feeling captured so keenly in your title. This concise expression is loaded with compassion and acknowledgement of the truth of hopelessness, “Another lonely face they’ll likely ignore?” That is a perfect ending for a poem that contains — “Don’t touch” peoples”. Like a complex taste, this has salt and bitters, hot and cold, tragedy and trajectory. Well captioned and illustrated, and accurately inserting the word ‘fear.’ I love the line, “Who will lift up their face and see”. I’m glad I finally lifted up my computer lid and read this. ~~ djl
