Aged Friend

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As one gets older, one can’t help but imagine good times past…and maybe to come. How lonely it must be for the lonely. Today marks the day Taylor died of a brain tumor, her tail wagging up to her final exit.

Poem Artwork

Aged Friend

Now I am so cold
The overhead florescent light
Carries me back
Where last I saw you
Making my eyelids heavy with sorrow
Then…
And now

With your signature red kerchief
Draped ‘round your neck
How forlornly moved your tumor-burdened eyes

As they led you off
You glanced back
The remembrance of our joyful days
Remained reflected in your painful grin
A part of me is happy though
Happy you never had to play with this human trick
I’ve been told “life support” sucks

Chances are…

I may not be seeing you shortly

Still too much to do

But you’ll know when I arrive

I’ll be throwin’ your rubber ball
Or your favorite stick

Stay well

Wherever you are

John’s response is also mine. When this swell of heat and sting of eye floods into a face while reading…..well….that is the visceral power of a column of words put together in that exact way. ~~ djl

How beautiful the love of a best furry friend, expressed with longing and sadness and a great deal of love that will last until you meet again.

A wonderful benediction for an old friend, Taylor. And what a wonderful photo!

Yes, they are so loyal and so willing to accept the pain of whatever ails them without even a whimper. So many with their lives cut short by something like brain cancer. Hopefully, if only in your dreams, you will be throwing that rubber ball or stick to Taylor.

It's amazing how we treasure (and remember) our pets. Thes photo of this dog, magnificent, because the dog projects magnificence, the red bandana just an added touch of nobility. The poem itself, well, it brought tears to my eyes. Enough said.
