Spartan Wealth

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Both nature and man’s creativity are subject to paying the price for such existence. Sadly, little of life remains free to just be. Yet, how priceless are the riches inherent in that state of integrity and responsibility of an artist?. Many believe that love cannot exist without this kind of honesty and accountability in projecting a personal creation.

Poem Artwork

Spartan Wealth

Creation asks not for center stage.

How plentiful these quiet treasures
Demanding not a price,
Void of glitter,
Gaff,
Loud acclaim drowning senses,
And reason

Imagination pursues instead
Honesty’s nod,
The up-and-down gesture
Everyday patrons volunteer
On discovering virtuosity’s subtle essence.

Just as a flower needs but sunshine and moisture,
So too the Van Goghs of everyday living
Patiently await man’s simple willingness
To emote with the light of a smile,
Perhaps even tears,
Knowing as in nature,
Creative efforts spawn
Reciprocal wavelengths of appreciation,
Finding respite wherever
An honest heart and mind’s tuning fork awaits.

Often…

Creation senses not the obvious,
Artistry’s honorific slips,
Obliging a personage quest,
Unaware resultant luminary trappings
Often engender insecurities,
Petrifying life’s inner sanctum,
That place where inception seeds the unknown,
Bestows lasting memories
Where both a mother’s caress
And the brush strokes of oiled color
Add to the canvas of expectancy’s
Freely shared gifts and rewards.

Too late at times

Inspiration succumbs to notoriety’s demands,
Obliging a servitude to fame,
Risking enslavement,
Either to gilded prisons,
Or the bridled razor wire of power,
Needing to gallop down a home stretch
Willingly adding to the blood-laden turf
Determined that the day’s finish line
Will provide yet another carrot
To satiate the bestial appetite for superiority.

Fortunately…

A meaningful number
Manage to avoid a system’s pandering,
Obviating trophydom’s trap,
Existing solely as creation’s flow,
Appeasing those whose hearts and minds
Seek but revelation of impact,
A seeding of possible enlightenment
Respecting the virtue of namelessness.

So goes the Spartan wealth,
Accumulating with anonymous authenticity,
Giving its own reciprocal nod
Back to that which inspires creativity.

All without demands.

Without price.

indeed, there is a high price for ultra success and of course fame, namely that one loses the very creativity instinctively pursued. Many a novelist whose first book "suffered great success" was seriously hard-put to match their achievement and could end up spending the rest of the entire lifetime trying to do some. Some very memorable lines in this one, as noted by others below.

Impressive and thought provoking, Odin. To be who you are, to authenically live and communicate, we have to first know who we are. That is the battle to know and love ones self. Well penned.

Much of the imagery in this illustrates and effectively nails your premise. One of your phrases: "To satiate the bestial appetite for superiority" had the strength of a laser. Being authentic is (IMO) one of the most important aspects of original expression. Whatever form one's original expression may take. Creativity is not just a thought process, it's a lifestyle, that at some point ceases being an option, and becomes essential to remaining vibrant and healthy. "Servitude to fame' as you say, IMO requires creative types to often rehash, over and over again, the same crap that made them famous. That kind of a comfort(?) zone is one of the worst enemies to the creative mind. A powerful poetic statement, Odin. You have hit a new stride lately in your writing. There is still much for you to do. With respect. r

Just being able, from a Spartan life, to reach the finish line of a daily creation, is certainly an accomplishment that should be noticed. But if not noticed, a creation, nonetheless.

In a world shifted from being on one of the "best" lists, it is now a matter of how many views or clicks one gets floor ones creation on the Internet. As those clicks add up, one's life work can gain or lose prominence.
