When staring at the ceiling, we sometimes forget how valuable our often upside-down nighttime perspective aids our everyday fantasies.

Mystic Fly Casting

Once the boy made fly hooks
after school for ten cents a hook.
Big money then
for big dreams... then.

Now the boy a vintage man
has only nocturnal dreams
needing little money... now.

How prescient he thinks,
staring up at ceiling images,
casting his line out into the dark,
like hooks needing to catch new dreams,
the ones swimming freely for the taking,
his heart the willing bait.

Night after night,
his inner feelings a tether,
floats beyond his past
until unknown stars
blink their infinite welcome.

His spirit takes heed,
the line reeled out to its end,
the hook’s purposeful drift
bringing a sigh to his throat.

Up there,
the stars, like other fishermen of providence,
pepper his longing with their inherent sparkle,
like the surface of a great lake reflecting its surroundings,
an invitation to join in their celestial campfire,
allow the embers and flames to ignite dreams never waned,
even when often flickering of dim flame.

Is it the pumping heart that keeps operative
the lure that makes the pull-in so rewarding,
the catch and release so needed
in keeping alive the dreams?

It’s late…

His eyes flutter,
as the hook, now a dangling shadow in the abyss,
finds respite ‘til another night.

A perplexed moth and spider,
gaze down from the ceiling.
The man recedes into sleep.
A mystical abandonment enveloping
his smiling eyelids.

"Celestial campfire" great phrase. Conjures many images and thoughts, as does the poem. Curiosity, imagination and a source. To remain vibrant and productive creatively there must be an inlet, this to encourage circulation and cleansing, and an outlet to allow purging. Without this, the writer/poet becomes like a stagnant pond, or a dead sea, and becomes more interested in a tweeting shallow acceptance from others of like mind. Enjoyed this.

Peaceful and serene. I’ve made a few fly hooks myself as a child and still have them in my tackle box. But I’d never thought to write something so beautiful out of it’s imagery. Well done!

What a wonderful allegory comparing flyfishing with dream casting! I cast my line for a dream about darkness after discussing our next anthology, In the Shadows, with my writers group, and lo and behold, I snagged one. A dream that was perfect for the short story I'm writing to that theme. So, I caught it and didn't release it like so many others.

You made me recall, as a Boy Scout, competing with the local Girl Scouts in my 6th grade class. It was on local television with a charades game called Quick On the Draw. I won a fly making kit. I managed to make a few flies with it, but didn't have a fly rod and there weren't any trout in cattle polluted streams so I went for the big catch with large plugs and lures and lost more than I caught when my line broke on my spin cast rod and reel. I just wasn't good at small things even with my myopia.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Easily my favorite lines are: “the catch and release so needed/in keeping alive the dreams?” Reason being how it transfers for me from ‘dreams’ to ‘memories’ — the grasp (catch) of a loveful memory of a person past, which actually brings them back to life right there with you; and the (release) in letting the person go back on the shelf. ~~ djl

"Casting his line out into the dark, like hooks needs to catch new dreams." Love this line, among many others. "Until unknown stars blink their welcome." Yes, indeed.
