Silence

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Finding peace amidst the chaos is but one of the chores of Zen belief. Such focus was stirred up recently while reading Garret Keizer’s book, "The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want: A Book About Noise." (Image by George Digalakis)

Poem Artwork

 Silence

Like a flamingo in repose

or a hooded falcon at rest

such Silence asks little

Listen

Fearing tumult at birth's door

mothers intuitively send the quiet asunder

knowing attachment bodes ill

one's preamble to being

Savagely Silence clings to grounding

aware

but not of danger

anticipating

but not of respite

Just as the falcon must ready the flight

as talon cinched safety gives way to change

to freedom's beckon

So too umbilical secures our random flings of arms and legs

knowing Silence gives way

to crawling

walking

running

Now ambulatory

moving through yesterday's Silence

leaving behind birth's soft caress

the inner soft voice asks

Why?

Modernity's torrid insistence

urges growth beyond

one's birthright

one's ambition

one's anything

While Silence remains ever faithful

patient the longing

knowing the outer noise

is but an illusion

begging to know

the unknown

As I remember it being proffered: There is silence before being born, and there is silence after death. Life seems to be nothing but noise between two unfathomable silences. Thanx 4 sharing. Enjoyed. r

I was having a little trouble connecting birth with silence. Most babies come in the world yelling loudly about the uncomfortable feeling of the cold air and a spank to the butt. But then you get into how our world is so noisy with so many things going on forcing children to grow up beyond their years.

Perhaps so. But if you have children that don't know each other and put them together, before long they are busy doing something with each other. Never sitting still and so and was looking at each other. To them it's a waste of their learning time.

I've never had a real need to following any Zen masters. I just take several times during the day when ideas relax and think of nothing. Sometimes close my eyes and listen to my own silence for a while before getting back to whatever I'm doing. A great stress releaser.

An interesting take on a challenging topic that stirs the hearts of poets myself included. How often have I written about silence, trying to explore it many different aspects. Especially love your last line: "the outer noise if but an illusion begging to know the unknown." Isn't that what silence is all about, silence wishing and waiting to be known.
