Sidewalk Imaginings

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Manhattan’s density of humans often reveals itself as imagined happiness. To people watch the sidewalks of 5th Ave or Madison Ave is to encounter faces of fantasy smiling through their often-unhappy lives.

Sidewalk Imaginings

There’ll always be The Old Man and the Sea,

And the archives of Poe and his nightmares.

How thrilling

How chilling

While many…

Have only the face masks of escape

As they glimpse at you once

And forever disappear.

Like diverted eyes of the stranger you caught

While navigating a crowded Avenue in New York,

Who quick-glanced over her shoulder in passing,

Thinking she’d seen a layered phantasm,

As her hand touched her flustered lips

Emitting muffled words that could have been inviting,

Even as she continued holding tight the moment

Of another sidewalk imagining.

Yes indeed, the experience of walking the busy streets of Manhattan, which I have often done, knowing every inch of the lay of the land, can be fascinating, uplifting, frightening. I have been smiled at, frowned upon, and attacked on the streets of New York. Hail the Big Apple. "How thrilling, how chilling," indeed.
