Owning Yourself

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As humans, our journey inevitably seeks out the truth of life. A road running into the horizon symbolizing life's journey, filled with sunny and cloudy patches indicating both the joys and trials. A person standing at the start of the road, looking forward, suggesting the uncertainty and anticipation one experiences in life. The road is covered with various footprints conveying the experiences and choices made in life. A sunset in the background, representing the inevitable passing of time. Blooming flowers along the road symbolizing hope and rebirth. Life being of compromises and acquiescing, how disturbing to lose ownership of self. (Painting by Easy-Peasy. AI)

Owning Yourself

Might it be that no one belongs to no one,

Save themselves?

Why has society set up a grand answer?

Couples,

Marriage

Live ins

Et al

All of it might be a scam

One that seductively asks we avoid the question

Do You Own Yourself?

For…

Lest you forget the mandate:

You are part of a leasing-super-natural-scheme

Created by those who have the power and money to dominate

EVERYTHING.

Of course

There are those in a compatible relationship,

Having made it through the razor wire and shredded psychic phase

Remaining cogent via spit and glue applied liberally to the heart and mind.

Once totally immersed in comfort with another…

Remind yourself that you own yourself

The good

The bad

The indifferent.

Apologies accepted,

But not as redemption,

Should you be playing

The duality game,

Trying to accommodate both sides.

Yes…

He or she

Will look at you

At me

And wonder

Can one beat out the threat of Self-loathing

Leading to chronic illness

And death?

Or…

Might one experience that important epiphany,

Get the answer to life’s grand scale,

Accept that to know the grandness,

One genuinely has to embrace the ultimate test…

Just me assuming full responsibility for me,

Discovering the clarity of knowing

What it is like to truly own yourself?

Your premise is spot on and thought-provoking for this day and age. Through the idea of "owning oneself", you raise the specter of accountability for ourselves and what we do, the free will posited by the religions leading to the symbolic image of the Day of Judgement. Today, people have little inclination to accept responsibility, much less accountability, for their behavior and their actions, it is an international malaise that modern-day society needs to reconcile. You end with a question; indeed one that everyone should be forced to answer in one way or another.

There is the scent of resolve and stoicism in this. Happiness is achieved when your life is flowing well. Well-being is realized with small steps. (Philosopher Zeno) And though I agree with both, neither axiom is the end all. The spirit of your thoughts brought to mind too something Nietzsche proffered: "The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." These things resonate a certain way, but no philosophy, or mindset, or revelation from the human mind, resolves the human dilemma. We never really own ourselves. The God who created us owns us. We are however responsible for our actions. Thanks for sharing. You're one of the very few who still encourage thought. Peace...

This one is very personal. I have found that accepting the way I am has made it a lot easier for me to establish relationships with others. But we are all different, so while there are many fish in the sea, very few will be devoted for no other reason then great affection and longing to be with us.

The image you provided seems to show desolation on the other side of both fences. Certainly keeping one on the straight and narrow between flowers of the same blooming. But it is very surreal and therefore, striking.
