Your Own Razor's Edge

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Far beyond the entertainment venue of reading or watching the film, “The Razor’s Edge” original was a message. Some of us got it. (Image from the film: The Razor’s Edge-1946)

Your Own Razor’s Edge

Growing is a bitch at times

To advance from adolescent ambition

To adult

To senior

To…

Well…

What is beyond?

Razor wire and experiences’ casualties

Make for incentive

But…

Where might it take one?

Spiritual without religion?

Religion with compassion?

Finding one’s way?

The journey may take you

To the “Be Here Now” gift.

However…

India and a guru

May not work,

Economics in rule.

But…

Listen to the Guru within

The voice that will utter directions.

Perhaps even

Answer.

But today…

It is becoming much harder to

Be here now,

To listen,

To hear,

With all one’s senses,

Above the noise of societal demand,

“listen to me,'

I’m the commerce voice,

The one who without your knowledge

Will take you into a courtroom

Of your mind,

And like a tainted trial,

Exonerate you of all your ineptness,

Honor your guilt,

Strip you of any integrity,

Rob you of any compassion for others,

Promote your thinking only of yourself,

As you fear 'you' are the only

Person that matters."

Oh…

To be pulled to the side of humbleness

Where listening to a humanist’s credo

Will give you peace,

Might be an anomaly beyond your scope.

How?

How?

What’s next?

Far too many are uttering in their sleep.

We all own our own Razor’s Edge

Proceed with care.

Review comments for this are fascinating for me. Tremendous line: “Exonerate you of all your ineptness,” — so unlike Richard, I deeply understand preoccupation with said ‘exoneration.’ ~~ djl

Prosetry with such helpful wisdom for those who are seeking a better place in their life.

You make me wish I had seen the movie, Razors Edge, from what you have written here. So much great philosophy came out of the utter madness of World War II. And plays like, Catch-22, God Is on Our Side and others.

I have passed that edge you describe, I believe, and am so happy where I'm at right now.

The search for truth and meaning has driven humankind from the beginning. To find who you are, and where you're supposed to be, is something that befuddles and eludes many. I knew who I was in my preteens. My biggest (and ongoing) struggle has been finding where I fit in. I can't help sensing that there are references in this about Trump. I do not understand the worlds love/hate preoccupation with him. "Proceed with care" yes. I agree. Proceed also with spiritual wisdom. Thanks for your honesty. Find peace.... rlc

It is my belief that people live within their surroundings, within their careers, within their problems, within the world, within their preconceived notions and worldview, but they no longer live within themselves. Everything is externalized and nothing is any longer internalized. Knowledge for its own sake and as a weapon, rather than knowledge to be incorporated as wisdom. That's what I think you are getting at in this poem. At least raising the question, which is what poet's should do, get people thinking about themselves and their own motivations.

I don't know what to make of this. Is it criticism towards someone you think is pushing their mind onto yours,or as the expression in Sweden goes "slamming their bible in your head". Or is it advice to someone trying to find their souls way in this harsh world. I have never seen the film you speak of. "We all own our own Razor's edge" Proceed with care" are powerful lines to end this poem with. It leaves the readers mind reeling into thoughts of where the danger lies. In ones own psyche? Or in the psyche that can get affected by what we say and what we write? I'm intrigued.

Words of wisdom! Proceed with care.

If we lived with care as our daily watchword, I suspect that we humans would be sleeping much more comfortably and not living on the razor's edge.

Many blessings to you and your family, Odin.
