Occam's Razor as Arbiter

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Occam’s razor is a principle often attributed to 14th-century friar William of Ockham saying: if you have two competing ideas to explain the same phenomenon, you should prefer the simpler one.

 Occam’s Razor as Arbiter

Might the simplest of explanations be the right one?

In the maze of thoughts, where complexity weaves its web,

the sharpness of a simple thread of clarity

 cuts through the tangled mess.

Words, like gentle rustling, unravel the knots of confusion,

each syllable a beacon, guiding us to understanding.

In the quiet reserve of a hush, truth finds its voice,

unburdened by the weight of unnecessary adornment.

A child’s question, a teacher’s patient reply,

the elegance of a clear answer in a world of noise and haste.

For in the heart of simplicity, lies the power to illuminate,

to bridge the chasms of doubt and bring light to the darkest corners.

Your poem reminds me of an essential point that I always try to keep in focus when teaching, keep things simple and clear. Much that I see from other professors is convoluted and unclear, so I think my students appreciate when I get them the straight talk and make it known what the task and objectives are. Such a simple poem, and yes, to the clear point.

I appreciate this poem, Odin. In my long life and many decisions and situations I have found your premise to be true. This is an outstanding poem.

Your poem simply tells it like it is. No need to go around the problem.

Whenever, I try to show my partner some of the multiple ways to do things with her multiple computers, she gets upset and asks me to go by simple steps directly to the solution and not, "go round and round."

Whenever we get on the computer together she has a quick trigger finger and is always clicking the wrong button--therefore making things very confusing instead of going straight to the solution. But lately, with tightened Internet security, just logging onto a familiar website can be a nightmare requiring several calls with long wait times.

Given two or more ways to solve a problem, the simplest way is usually preferred. It holds in most aspects of life. Still, for the life of me, I can rarely re-pack an unpacked box, or assemble any kind of gizmo by following a short-cut or the written instructions--especially one from the Far East. Go figure. Occam would love your poem. And so do I.
