Duality

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), sometimes called split, multiple, or dual personality, is when a person has two or more sets of thoughts, actions, and behaviors. And when they are used carelessly, sadness can take over.

Poem Artwork

 Duality

Beneath the surface, a hidden current flows,

A life split in two, each side a secret.

By day, a mask of honesty and grace,

By night, a shadowed figure, cloaked in lies.

In the morning light,

 a face emerges,

Polished, composed, ready for the world.

A mask of confidence, a shield of smiles,

Navigating the currents of expectation.

But in the quiet corners of the night,

Another self awakens, raw and unguarded.

 Dreams and fears intertwine,

A dance of shadows and whispers.

Two lives, parallel yet intertwined,

One for the world, one for the soul.

Each step a balance, each breath a choice,

Between the seen and the unseen.

A dance of deception, intricate and cold,

Each step calculated, each move concealed.

In the mirror, reflections blur,

Truths and facades merge and part.

A journey of duality,

Of words spoken with a silver tongue,

Promises made, only to be broken.

Such is the quest for wholeness,

In the tapestry of existence.

Where truth buried deep, suffocates by pretense,

A soul fragmented, torn between facades

Where the heart beats with a hollow echo,

Yearning for release, for the chains to break.

But the web of deceit tightens its grip,

A prison of one’s own making, inescapable.

Two lives, one of light, one of shadow,

Interwoven yet forever apart.

A journey through the labyrinth of lies,

Seeking redemption, yet fearing the truth.

What you have eloquently described here are the two sides of human nature, the one seeking light, the other prone to darkness. The life struggle symbolized daily in the interaction of day and night. Everyone must come to terms with the duality in their nature in order to find out in the end who they really are. A thought-provoking poem.

An interesting look into a tough (but fascinating) subject that's more widespread in this world than one might believe. It has at least two distinct and enduring personality states that suffer with inexplicable intrusions into the individuals conscious state - voices, impulses, trauma related beliefs, terrible intrusive thoughts etc.
As I scribble this, a host of Hollywood characters with obvious ‘DID’ come to mind. And they've entertained people (of all ages) for many decades. Peter Parker/Spider-man. Clark Kent/Superman. Bruce Wayne/Batman. Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Henry Pym/Antman. The Incredible Hulk. The list is long. In a different vein - what about the duality of New York skyscrapers incorporating abstract patterns of light and shadow that express the duality of feeling, and also for many New Yorker's, the fascination and loathing one invariably comes to feel for the city. Enjoyed this. Fires the synapses. Well done. Peace. r
