Duty

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Moral and legal obligations can be trying at time, given most of us want to do the right thing. We learn early in our lives that duty is a constant, yet many ignore the principle and suffer unnecessarily. (Painting by Norman Rockwell – Merlin’s return to duty – in crayon))

 Duty

A weight that rests upon the shoulders,
Invisible yet ever-present,
A call that echoes in the quiet moments,
Unyielding, unwavering,
It asks for sacrifice,
It demands commitment,
Not for glory, not for praise,
But for the simple act of doing,
For the sake of others,
For the sake of the self,
A path walked with steady steps,
Through the storms and the calm,
Duty is the silent promise,
The unspoken vow,
To stand firm,
To hold fast,
To be the anchor in the tempest,
The light in the dark,
Duty is the heart’s resolve,
The mind’s determination,
The soul’s quiet strength,
In the face of all that comes,
Duty remains,
A constant,
A guide,
A purpose.

I like this topic. Duty can mean obligation, responsibility, or a manner of giving, as in gift. “For the sake of others,/For the sake of the self” and therein lies the rub. I like “In the face of all that comes,” for that involves making wise choices between ‘self’ and ‘other.’ We’re seeing this in the political arena. Commitment and sacrifice, to be the “light in the dark”. Enjoyed this very much, Odin ~~ djl

Simply beautiful. Duty, a topic often neglected if not ignored, made manifest through the imagery and sense of this exquisite poem.
