Through the Looking Glass
If creative expression has many modalities,
Perhaps…
Van Gogh chose swirling to life
A “Starry Nite” dream of celestial wonderment,
While Pollock gave a volcanic eruption of pigment splash
To his galactic abstraction.
Both of mind.
Both of passion.
Both of aroused inner world creative compulsion.
Not unlike human birth,
The artist places his first stroke
In an effort to begin the process of birth,
Knowing that just as sperm needs to fertilize an egg,
So too the brush upon canvas begins the inseminate journey
Of another kind,
That of unique life-giving determination.
Such might be…
Stepping further through the looking glass
Into a virtual house of mirrors,
Each mode vying for a moment or two of acknowledgment.
Pollock on the other hand, as I recall, made theater of his process of creating paint spattered collages of color gathering huge prices for his wall sized creations.
Was Van Gogh looking back through the looking glass at Pollock's success as only a brief fed in time
