The Tears of War

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Several ongoing major conflicts are happening globally. One of the most significant is the Russia-Ukraine War, which has been ongoing since February 2022. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the Gaza-Israel conflict, continues to be a source of tension and violence. In Asia, the conflict in Myanmar, one of the longest-running civil wars in the world, continues, as well as other regional conflicts. Other ongoing conflicts include those in Sudan, Congo, and Yemen.  The Tears of War

What is this silence of eruption?

This stifled resonance of tremors below?

Why are the glistening ducts emitting but mutant cries down the face of truth?

When will the quiet pain find the freedom to just be that which it longs to be—peace?

Last night

Many wished tomorrow morning would vanish

Where once there were sunrises waiting to be seen

Even as clouds seemed heavy

Hope was there

But now

Somewhere in all the last nights

And the time in between

Emptiness fills the moonlit sky where once bright reminders

Pointed to memories yet to come

Road signs not yet discovered

As given

Every morning explodes again

And last night becomes today

Making all that seemed possible

Evaporate with the mist of drifting fog

Saturated with bodily smoke

The shorelines of lost souls continuing to decay

Making friendly trade winds steer afar

Where once their warmth cradled innocent solitude

Hopefully the tonights of future tomorrows will bring new beginnings

For time cannot repeat itself

It can only continue forward as the next interval

Leaving in its path the residue once thought…

Once even called…

What was it called back then

When there was never a possible “last” night?

Love?

A grim reminder of the price of war. You write of new beginnings that never seem to come for some areas of the world where war just seems to be ongoing forever.

Religions based on expansion have driven war. Especially among those who have been disenfranchised by war before and have vengeance on their mind. Unfortunately when war disrupts a community held in subservience for a very long time, often it is military leaders who become dictators and proponents of greed who rise to take over in the confusion and smoke.

Will it ever end?

A most apt poem for our time depicting the devastation of war intermingled with the longing and aspiration for peace, Lost souls, fading hope and yes, the relentless passage of time. My last major trip, just before the pandemic in March of 2020 was to Myanmar, first stop Mandalay, the romanticized name of one of its towns mentioned in one of Kipling's poems. The country, renamed of course from Burma, has been ruled by a military junta for years, but the people, oh the people, were a delight to meet and learn about their country from.
