Poem Artwork

 Skin Deep

As mirrors will always be evasive,

“To be or not to be” is indeed the question,

Knowing beneath the tissue of our façade

Resides both truth and the lie.

Vulnerable is the heart unguarded,

An inner self of truth like a lighthouse beacon showing the way,

Where clarity defends the tempest of lies,

Where the tangled web of shadows,

And its labyrinth of contradictions,

Tries to twist truth into enough turmoil

To reduce it to jagged shards of veracity.

Yes…

The inner self is a sugar and spite carnival of chaos,

Where masks are changed often,

And the heart’s defense of cloaking in secrecy

Is often its only shield against the discord

Of dishonesty’s maligning efforts to destroy truth.

Truth’s clarity resides beside the tangled web of shadowed falsehoods,

But in the end, our inner self has the tenacity

To retain and shape the truths we hold.

In the mirror, we seek our reflection,

Not the lie of all lies others would decree,

But beneath the reflection

Where our truthful self is found,

The part of us that can choose to discover

Realness will not be bound,

It will be unchained and free,

Living a life of authenticity.

 Beneath

And beyond.

A poem rich in metaphor. I especially like the use of mirrors used hauntingly throughout, mirrors that don't just reflect, but that also distort, question and conceal.. Then the parity lo "to be or not to be" with "resides both truth and the lie". Where then is the true identity. Good question that needs resolving if we are ever to truly "know thyself".

"Most men live lives of quiet desperation." Thoreau

Your prosetry what attempt to reveal the turmoil within beneath the skin. The struggle with what is lie and what is truth. We all lie to protect others, but sometimes it is dangerous to let it go too far.

Some good thoughts in this writing.

Ron
