Dreams Maturing

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

If we stop and allow, daytime dreams of happiness and nocturnal dreams of struggle are a pairing of paradoxical “bliss” and “toil”… both intimately involved in all of us. (Image Pinterest)

Dreams Maturing

How arrives such moments?

Those glimpses,
Realms consciousness first realized
Amidst the elusive dreams of a child,
That place of castles and warriors,
Princesses and silken hair,
Always subjected to a blank slate
On awakening.

Later

Dreams seem accessible.
We rush to write them down,
Speak them on the couch,
Beg reflection to arouse
Imagination’s past
Into future’s truth,
That place
Where swollen heat
Moistens into Nature’s tears,
Encouraging heart’s fantasies
To irrigate arid stagnation
From the mind.

Why do many,
Far too many,
Condemn wraithlike epiphanies
As wasted Time?

How sad,
Such avoidance.

This gracious invitation
Left to only grieve those
Ignoring such long ago
Childhood dreams,
Knowing not
Time’s only desire
Is to revisit
Its most intimate past.

Strange

Some never learn
How to realize dreams,
While others know well
 How to lose them.

Interesting how much of your work focuses on those earlier times in your life as you went through stages of maturity. At this point, it's almost all recollection.

In my earlier life, dreams mattered not in deep sleep. In my working life, sometimes difficult problems presented themselves as what we call in computing, loops. A reiteration of the same problem that never gets solved and keeps you awake. In recent years, story length stories that could have good or bad endings depending upon how I write them later.

Told with skill, care, and poignancy. I usually have a glass of wine before I write. You must get yours from the top shelf. Cheers!

Oh for the wonder marked by innocence of childhood dreams (castles and warriors//princesses and silken hair) and the disillusionment of adult dreams ("rush to write them down///beg reflection"). Finally the poet evokes "wraithlike epiphanies" as profound movement toward insight that we all need in our lives and should not be considered as "wasted time" by a society that undervalues reflection and imagination. Finally, time makes its appearance with the verse "Time's only desire is to revisit its post intimate past," a tribute perhaps to the power of memory that allows people to reconnect with earlier thoughts. Excellent work.
