Duplicitous Power

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The world is rapidly becoming a politicized free-for-all. Most of us—whether as businessmen and women, scientists, educators or laborers in the fields—are at risk in becoming so saturated with lies, that we unknowingly could become mere ghosts of truth. (Image by Odin AI)

 Duplicitous Power

Power speaks…

In promises,
golden threads spun from breath,
each word a mirror
reflecting what you want to see—
never what it means.
Truth is a tool,
wielded only when convenient.

Power smiles…

In daylight,
Shakes hands with grace,
Poses with constituent selfies,
But as darkness approaches,
Power hides beneath the overcast,
Whispering to itself
Counting debts it never intends to pay.

Power’s walking partner…

Is the nemesis of precarious footing,
Desperately keeping the weight of fear

at a distance behind
As its hush of compromise,
Hovers as a haunting echo of those who once believed.

Power floats your name…

Then your dreams,
Your price.
Then with patient waiting,
Not to safely hold the tethered floatation,
But how far you’ll struggle to free youself of the bubble
And fully accept his lollypop-promises of hot air.

When duplicitous power fails,
And it always does,
It leaves behind a torrential vortex of make-believe,
Of masks,
Each disguise worn by someone new
Who thinks they are now in control.

You draw the line between perception and integrity nicely here. Integrity being sorely missed in everything today.

"A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage" Herbert Hoover's campaign slogan in 1928. We all know how that turned out in 1929.

Why do people fall so easily for duplicitous lies? I don't know. Perhaps for the same reason we have become such conspicuous consumers as a result of cleverly crafted commercials for goods we don't need but end up wanting.

This poem Duplicitous Power is a strong indictment of the kind of political theater we are experiencing these days, may they be quickly over. Some fine lines include: "golden threads spun from breath{, and that's about all it is, lies changing from day to day, all crafted to deceive. Each "word a mirror", not of the truth, but of the deception that is being perpetrated. Then there is the public persona, vs the private intent. Hopefully, all things do pass and so will this phase of our politics.
