Reality's Enigmatic Meaning

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Another day in the many where reality’s truth is played out by bad actors in far too many venues. Some of us are left struggling to revive the true meaning of reality. Imagining takes center stage. (Image by Odin AI)

 Reality’s Enigmatic Meaning

It begins like fog rolling downhill,

soft-footed,

uninvited,

a thought that forgets its name.

Light flickers like a moth’s hesitation,

and the self stutters forward,

half-formed, half-fleeing.

Then comes the sprint,

a pulse breaking glass,

energy vaulting over reason

like a deer startled by its own shadow.

We chase it,

barefoot through the mind’s underbrush,

scraped by questions we can’t name as we stall.

The body becomes a cul-de-sac,

a roundabout of longing where soul and skin circle endlessly.

We are traffic jams of meaning,

horns blaring in languages we refuse to learn.

Still, we move like tectonic plates beneath belief,

slow, grinding toward some myth of arrival,

where absence wears the color of sunrise on a beggar’s cheek.

Love’s visit comes with the moon’s wink lost in daylight,

a tear that evaporates before it’s understood,

while elsewhere, it whispers beginnings

that bloom like moss on forgotten stone.

But truth…

It pirouettes wearing a make-believe tuxedo,

arriving not as revelation,

but as a magician of sorts

sending rabbits mindlessly jumping from magic hat to magic hat.

You smile, then laugh, and suddenly,

everything crazy feels lighter,

as the pursuit of reality’s meaning continues.

I always enjoy reading the comments to our works and contributions to the literary art here. John’s most memorable line is different than mine (and isn’t that part of the goodness of comments…). Mine is “where absence wears the color of sunrise on a beggar’s cheek.”. That ‘beggar’s cheek’ — so unique a verbal invite. It made me see beauty, warmth and empathy in the same glimpse. I also am drawn to the lines: “and the self stutters forward,” also “that blooms like moss on forgotten stone.” I find that there is generous atmosphere and a kind of dance in this poem, Odin. ~~ djl

Reality elegantly exposed as a fog, a mist, a smile. How elusive it can be in its many iterations.

A most memorable line: "with the moon's wink lost in daylight."

For all of its illumination, we do miss things in daylight, such as the moon and stars.

It takes first, doubt, and then imagination, followed by a lot of hard work and double checking, to determine reality from all of the theory, held captive by beliefs of various clothing that groups of people tend to wear as protection against their fear of the unknown.

They don't cater to reality they cater to the assurance from someone of power that he/she knows the truth, the whole truth, and the right truth. Even the preposterous can be thought of as being reality if rammed down our throat like an offer we can't refuse.
