Speedbumps

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Someone once told me I’d be okay…”You’re a survivor.” Over time, I’ve concluded we are all survivors and we “make it” in our chosen direction if we bury the “victim” card. (Image by Odin AI)

 “Speedbumps

Defend…

Their never smooth as glass roads.

Rather shadowy ripples like ponds struck by wind,
their stone waves erupting like fists from down under,
punching the tires of our certainty.

We curse…

The ground speaking in shocks,
sudden drumbeats saying: slow down,

feel the pulse beneath your body.

A fallen tree...

Obstructs the path,
not as a thief of progress,
rather a barricade of wisdom,
its roots clawing the soil like talons
gripping the truth we try to outrun.

Growth…

Knows not a straight sprint,
it corkscrews like a tornado,
lunging like rivers gnawing stone
with the teeth of time and persistence.

Disaster…

Wears the mask of chaos,
but beneath the mask,
a sculptor’s hammer strikes sparks
from the iron of our will.

Every pavement crack…
a lightning vein,
a flash of gold if we dare to dig,
if we dare to believe
that brokenness is the forge where wisdom builds.

The hush…

Follows after the storm.
Hope bursts like fireworks

from the blackened sky of wild, kinetic urgency,
throwing lightning bolts of promise

that every bruise becomes a seed,
every scar a map leading us to the light

that hunts the dark.

You roar…
Letting the bumps rise like mountains,
letting the storms slam their fists against your windows,
allowing the wind to rip the pages of your plans
and hurl them into the sky like confetti.

No…

We will not crawl,
we will charge through the wreckage,
laughing like thunder clapping bruises
to bloom into brilliance.

Bring it on!
Our battle cry!

Rumbling through every detour,

every derailment,
every wild twist of fate,
knowing the roads without resistance
are coffins for the soul.

We are built for impact.

We are built to roar.

I'm sure you've experienced much that you've written here. Now you are able to write vividly about it.

Weirdly, I watched a movie that I hadn't heard of before last night. The woman in The Long Kiss Good Night (1998) played by Gina Davis encountered about as many speed bumps as one could encounter in a single movie and rose like Phoenix every time.

Fortunately, for most of us, our speed bumps are mostly just tar strips filling cracks in concrete.

Except when we encounter the big C.

The poems overflows with vivid images of roads, storms, trees, cracks, and even cosmic forces, all seemingly designed to highlight the inevitability of hardship in people's lives complemented by the human will to get through it all. Speedbumps, fallen trees, pavement cracks framed not necessarily as a hindrance as is usually assumed but as wisdom and persistence in surmounting these obstacles. Indeed, the battle cry "Bring it on! Our battle cry! pretty much sums up the approach to these inevitable hardships of life, an appropriate, even comforting message for the troubled time we live in.
