Intentionally Carving One’s Breath
Start small.
Drink the water as if today is the only cup.
Stand in the sunlight a second longer
before naming the hour useful.
Do not wait,
tie intention into the most ordinary acts,
and let this breath be chosen, not automatic.
Next, stop pretending you need tomorrow’s map.
Step where the fog still connects the ground to air.
Say yes without rehearsal,
walk out of jobs, habits, loves that already know their ending.
Live for today deliberately,
uncertain, awake, and unconventional by refusing the alone state.
With years, risk thickens.
You lend your chest to causes that may never praise you,
break yourself open for work that gives nothing back but resistance.
You sacrifice reputation, comfort, even safety,
because allowing life to merely happen is a greater violence than losing it.
Your breath now burns, but its flame leans forward.
And when the last edge arrives,
you do not gasp or beg the air for mercy.
You do not perform fear.
You carve one final breath with steady hands,
reach where no one dared the risk before,
and release it cleanly,
merely breathing freedom,
having never waited to live.
