Puppeteering History
I.
It begins before history learns its own name,
in rooms where adults mistake authority for love.
Threats are whispered like bedtime stories,
behave or else, agree or be abandoned.
A child becomes a small nation under siege,
choices sanctioned, boundaries occupied.
Leverage arrives early:
approval withheld, safety conditional.
Control is introduced as protection,
and the first strings are tied
where trust should have been.
II.
The child grows and the method expands.
Schoolyards scale the lesson,
dominance tested publicly now,
humiliation used as currency.
Later, corridors stretch into boardrooms,
where smiles replace shouting
but the pressure is heavier.
Contracts become cages,
debt becomes a leash,
careers bend under the threat of erasure.
Greed rationalizes itself as efficiency
while human motion is reduced
to compliance metrics.
III.
History widens.
Homes turn into brands,
brands into movements,
movements into states.
Control learns efficiency:
economic threats instead of fists,
policy instead of shouting,
fear wrapped in legality.
Leverage stacks like monuments,
supply chains, surveillance, celebrity worship.
Dominance declares itself stability,
and greed, now global,
pulls millions of strings at once,
each thinner than the last.
IV.
Eventually the weight wins.
Too many lives hang from too few hands.
The strings fray, then snap,
not in rebellion, but exhaustion.
Bodies fall where history can see them now,
listless, unanimated, spent.
And the Geppettos of the world weep at the wreckage,
at the realization that control does not scale,
that there is no alternate timber,
no rewind of time.
Only a world shaped by pulled strings.
V.
And still…
Some strings do not hold forever
as they fray not only from strain
but from hands learning to loosen.
Some bodies do not fall;
they step out of the harness,
stiff at first, uncertain.
The Geppettos of the world weep,
but others bend and gather the broken bodies,
not to puppet again,
but to build.
History exhales.
Movement returns, imperfect and self‑directed.
beginning tomorrow’s future.
"Greed rationalizes itself as efficiency
while human motion is reduced
to compliance metrics."
Compliance is staying within the lines (walls) limiting communication and creativity. Freedom, itself.
But the world has always been this way. Much worse in the past. Major threats to humankind are looming that well force sanity over puppetry.
