Sunset Rising

Wiped the stale nicotine from memory's portal;
opened it slowly; Heard the voices; Screams;
and panic-
Every moment; Still lying closely underneath-
Below tearful blackness-
Aside painful thoughts-
Clutched tightly in the grips; Between the
boney fingers of a sunset rising-

Everything is right where we left it; They won't
let us forget-
Hell, We won't let us forget-
Media heads; Spilling coffee on our keyboards-
Anxiously awaits the next even larger story-
A louder boom; For their 'breaking news' cut in-
Making sure not a day goes by-

There are no tears in this emotionless vacuum;
We can only apply pressure to stop the bleeding-
I'll hold yours; While you hold mine; It's all kinda' crazy-
We've learned to play word games, and Mind games
with whomever will play-
Silently moving through time and space-
Our eyes meet with strangers; Too damn scared to speak-

We're not sick; Yet we aren't well; We may never
heal; but we'll move forward-
Pour another cup of coffee; Light another cigarette; And wait-
For the next louder boom; In the meantime; We'll stay clutched in the boney fingers of another
sunset rising-

I hate the smiles anchor people (almost) always have on their faces. That's part of the reason I stopped watching TV, especially after Mike died in the war...

WOW, Lisa! This is one helluva write. Woe to the reader who bops through and only reads the title. LOL. They'll leave a review with something like, "I really like sunrises. Beautiful." ;-) You know the media, especially the TV people. They only want the catch sound bite, and "if it bleeds it leads." A powerful commentary here, Lisa, on the world we're in. Ya' got skillz. ~~Nordette

a truely exceptionally well written poem ... a poem i would be proud to have written ... imagery is outstanding ... the prophetic and introspective perspective probing of the mindset of the "media heads" and the potential ramifications of their actions or nonaction is powerfully expressed in this extremely thought provoking write ... of course, i've just touched the surface of your overall intent in writing this ... it speaks for itself ...

Lisa,

I love the way you write. You have such a way with words and images that brings each word of your poem to life--this is no exception. The media overplays, and the public pays...well done, my friend, an incredibly astute write! You've penned another one into my library. BRAVA!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :)

Lisa, far too often I believe the darn media plays right into the hands of those who seek to destroy the harmony of the world under the guise of “reporting the news.” These are peerless days we are living in for sure! Incredible composition as only you can do so well. Thank you for sharing your work. Take good care and be well.

Fantastic capture of the days news madness. Anything for a rating is the mantra with all the plethora of stations vying for our buck! They no longer just report the news they make it, if they have to. So do like i did, just catch the headlines then tune out. Ed's poem today is spot on too! Splendid write Lisa!

...and we wait and we wait, knowing that another shoe is going to be dropped and knowing that the next will be much greater than the last; knowing that the memory of the last will fade quickly into the depths of the impending disaster. Like sitting ducks, we wait and pray while the plot to end freedom simmers from within and without our own land. The media waits like hungry wolves to be the first to pounce on the next tragedy, hoping for a Pulitzer for being the first to report. Emotionless other than for their own gain, we are force-fed their drivel until it tastes like truth and reality. Excellent job, Lisa, sorry to be so long winded but being like minded souls, you know that your poetry often provokes my own thoughts. Another of yours goes into my library.
Take care,
Sherry

My goodness this is surgical, well-paced and cuts to the quick, Lisa. You pen such a totality of emptiness and resignation - but not in an emotional way or one that is overly-laced with sentiment. Your images speak volumes and "Between the boney fingers of a sunset rising" is poetry to be printed and remembered as long as one "bloodless" day follows another... puts ideas into my head: Blodless days filled with bloodshed. You have captured the anaesthetised state chillingly. TY Kate xx

A powerful piece on the silent anticipation of destruction in this contemporary world. Few seem to realize how much dis-ease pervades our nearly every waking moment during these days of terrorism, war, plagues, racism, sexism, and some of every other kind of -ism, but SUNSET RISING makes it bittersweetly clear. A brilliant work.

Lisa,
This is an exceptional, gripping write that speaks not only for people, but a nation and a world. Innocence of life is dead but we move on as you say because we have to. Thank you this was an emotional one and I felt it way deep down.
