Eyes of Anger

With the remnants of just an old rag;
He wiped away what was left of the day-
He's seen things he'd never speak of-
He'd heard things he'd try to forget-
With his face in his hands; And only for
this very moment; He was hidden from all
the world; He couldn't see it; It couldn't see him; and he was untouched by
the defeats of ridicule

He'd one day leave here; Return to what
was his; His by the law of man; His
by the blood of others that stood before; Fell before in the same place as he-
So he kicked off the dirt from his boots; Leaned his rifle no more than an arm
length away-
Then returned to the eyes of the dark
haired boy

Wartime thoughts scattered on this desert
land; One of it's own, died in his arms-
His sleeve stained with the blood of a
senseless anger- He'll forever feel the
weight of the boy's limp body-
Ten years old; He'd witnessed a lifetime
of pain; Cast into the shadows of
death without a hand to hold to

Tomorrow, he'll carry that rifle, and
fill the boots again with sand-
Tomorrow he'll pass by the place where
anger overpowers life; Tomorrow,
he'll see things, he'll never speak of-
And hear things he'll try to forget-
But he knows that it will be forever that
he will return to the eyes
of the dark haired boy-

Haunting, Lisa, yet an excellent write. :( War is hell for everyone involved, and its effects reverberate through time and all eternity. Will we ever learn?

This is a heart-crushing write, Lisa. The sorrows of war are something that stays with the soldier for a lifetime. Too painful to ever tell, the stories remain locked in his memories and play forever like an old record on a broken phonograph...repeating, repeating, repeating. The haunting look in the eyes of those he had to bury, burned into the deepest depths of his soul. It is a difficult job being a soldier and we each owe them a lifetime of gratitude that we were not the ones placed in harms way or forced to be the witness of the senseless death and hatred that is war. We reap the graces of their sacrifice as we live in our rose tinted world with no real understanding of the true taste of freedom. Powerfully written, your accounts of the plights of our soldiers are as though you walked in their boots and as though you witnessed the heartache of their days first-hand. Excellent write, Lisa. Another one of your "bests." Happy New Year to you and all who you love.
Take care,
Sherry

Powerful write! I, personally need to see the visions you write about. I go about my daily life and sometimes forget about our soldiers and lives that are being lost every minute.

Stand tall, stand proud, voices that care are crying out loud, and before that soldier goes to sleep at night, we want him to understand that we care...Very well done, indeed!
