I See You

When I think of you; I think of how proud I
am;
There’s a sense of gratitude that finds my heart-
I want to lift you up; Lift you so high the whole
world will know your face; Your spirit; Your
goodness and grace-
Yet I understand you don’t need that; You just
want to go back to your rural, uneventful place
in life-
Back to your corporate job; Blue collar or white;
Back to your children, and your lovely wife

There will come a time when your wishes will be
granted; Oh how deserving you are; They are;
When you look at me with those questioning eyes;
I yearn to fulfill your wonderment-
There’s nothing more that I’d rather do, than to
answer them all for you-
Tell you; sooth you; Pat your back, and glorify
your sacrifices;
Yet I understand you don’t need that; You just
want to go back; Back to the life you knew

When I stand next to you; I hear the care-free tones
of children laughing; Mothers of all ages, praying-
Fathers leading their families, without fear-
I feel the excitement of Freedom, and I know how
good it is-
When I stand next to you, it’s not bombs exploding,
and rapid gunfire; No, It’s not death and destruction
that I see-
It’s clean pure water; Children learning; Flourishing
societies; I see roots spreading across the horizons,
that feed this world of family trees

Soldier, I see you; The Warrior; The Man; The Son;
The Father; The Husband; The Brother; The Comrade;
Soldier, I see you and I see a better world
