It Damn Well Hurts

Lest We Forget;
How soon we forgot-
The hardest of lessons taught-
Our watery borders, can no longer save us-
Protect us;
They brought war upon us; As we watched
from our high rise buildings-
and our rural streets-
Just like any other day;
Who would have guessed?
Who would have thought?
Who?

Oh this thing called war chips away our steadfastness,
burying us in shallow graves, beneath rubble and wires-
Marble headstones; Engraved for the living-
Siblings cry out for the return of their Brothers-
Lest We Forget; Oh child, we have forgotten

Does the jet fuel and smoke not still burn your throat?
Does the sight of death not still eat away at your eyes?
Where is the memory of that angel now gone?
Is our land today; Not as worthy of our dedication?
Lest We Forget; Oh child, we have forgotten

Rebirth that day; Re-open the womb of terror;
Enter now and face those left choking in the stairwells-
Reach through the blackness and find truth-
Oh it hurts; It damn well does; and will forevermore-
As it should; As it needs too-
Rebirth that day-
Lest We Forget; Oh child, we have forgotten

Our wounds, scabbed, scarred and faded-
Leaving us to carry on; Heal; Is that to forget?
Lest We Forget; Oh child, we have forgotten;
and so it will happen again-
and the memory of another angel will find us in tears,
choking on our own demise

Lest We Forget; Lest We Forget
oh child, We must not forget.

Goosebumps as I read this. You write as prophet crying out in a desert of ash and bone. We are a nation torn, Lisa. At least my heart is torn, between the peace it desires and those who call from their graves for justice and the knowledge that we must protect ourselves. POWERFUL!

a great tribute to our man and woman fighting to protect us. This country will never be able to forget them of 9-11.

A very fine tribute to those that lost their lives on 911, and your dedication to protect their memory from evaporating from our thoughts.

powerful poem! i will never forget ... one of my friends died in 9/11 and another firefighter friend is dying from the toxic effects of helping to look for survivors ... and i know many others who have lost or know someone lost that horrible day ...

as a country, protecting our securing and screening immigration must be of the highest concern ... it is a national security issue ... unfortunately, we have been brought to this state of affairs ... the world still needs a lot of evolving to do, in the meantime, as a soverign nation, we must protect ourselves ...

Heart and soul wrenching reality Lisa Reality, truth words most don't like to deal with. Thanks for being a voice in the wilderness! The kind that will make us face what should never be forgotten!

Hang in and keep the faith Lisa! Your hard work will be rewarded in time!

Ammerica is about to have a rude awakening. Soon. I would have thought 9-11 would have finally glavanized us. It hasn't. Are we so self-hating that we are doomed? I fear so.

This poem chilled me, these words burned into my heart:

Does the jet fuel and smoke not still burn your throat?
Does the sight of death not still eat away at your eyes?
Where is the memory of that angel now gone?
Is our land today; Not as worthy of our dedication?
Lest We Forget; Oh child, we have forgotten

Thank you, Lisa.

I once thought that the idea of Isolationism was crazy but as each day passes, I see it in a better light. Freedom and right to passage has a flip-side and that flip-side is vulnerability. We need to monitor and keep monitoring, as much as I despise giving up some of my rights to do so. We will sacrifice some of our freedoms, it is true but if it will help us to stop disasters like 9-11 then I I feel that the compromise is well worth it. Thank you for this reminder, Lisa, it is true, we have gotten soft and we have chosen to bury the pain that pulled the rug out from under us. I agree with Karen on this one...Close our borders...those who have a right to be here will still be able to get in. 500,000 protested, new immigration laws, in Los Angeles yesterday...that figure alone should serve as a wake-up call to all of us as to just how many illegal aliens we have in our country, and those are just the ones who showed up.
Take care,
Sherry

Lisa,

Oh, child, we have forgotten; it is up to poets like yourself to remind us. It will happen again, if we don't do something about it. A powerfully moving, stark, heartbreaking write; very well penned. Thank you for this one--we needed it.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Striking reminder to keep up the guard and not to become complacent in the presence(which could be anywhere, anytime) of the enemy that lurks.
