Holocaust

Was always told that death was silent,
Oh but now I know that isn’t true -
Each voice resounds; reverberates over and over-
Beating; beating on the chamber walls-
cries for the child; cries for the Mother-
Dying, with hands grasped tightly-
Knowing they’ll never let go of the love they share

Millions; Each one like me; You-
holding up that tiny, slightly worn shoe-
My eyes have leaned against tragic inhumanities,
cruelties, I can only hope no others will ever focus
on again-  But I know that isn’t so-
Man slaying man; Why do we kill? Murder and maim-
Is there truly one more pure? One man? One race?
One mind? One?
Pure?
No.
Evil?
Yes.
Man? Why do we kill? Murder and maim-

A world of greed; A universe of hate;
Long ago; yet it was only today-
Forget? How can one forget, what will happen
again tomorrow?
And again darkness will fall;  Although the stars
will shine through, there will be no light into the
soul of man-
Oh where have we been? Where will we go, afterwards?
Afterwards? Afterwards, you say?

In time another face, will press against the wire;
Breathing through the inhumane air of evil-
Just like then; today; tomorrow-
One weeps but never, never in silence-
Death comes; finding all but the silence-
No, death is not silent; but silence will ensure death

Chilling and so true! You provoke thought and your boldness is refreshing. "...silence will ensure death" ~ very profound.

I am with you 100% on the side of pessimism. Man has not shown the world in all of its recorded history one iota of trying to come to grips with the cruelty we incur on one another. On the flip side of that spectrum is man's continued scream of hate across the ocean, across the nation, across the state, across town, across the clothesline. No! When family cannot get along how in hell does anyone expect nations of different philosophies, different skin, different language to "get along." NO! It is a pipe dream to keep all of us from reverting back to barbarism. Hell of a poem, Lisa, it stirred me up, that is what poems are supposed to do, if they are any good.

One of the saddest times in our history Horizon you tapped into the silence reverenced by the Jewish people. In history we never cease to learn the lessons from this horrific genocide that took place in concentration camps. We are still dealt after 60 years with today’s genocide attempts in Sudan and many other places around the world. Thank you for this powerful reminder may the world take off the blinders and listen for those voices as you have poetess.

Hooray!!! Lisa is back and with a powerful message too! We have all been hoping that you were doing ok as e-mails kept coming back and we did not see you posting. I hope that your absence was due to a positive reason and not due to illness of something like that. OK back to the review...This poem grabs at the gut and twists. There are so many tragedies that we would all like to push them aside and not have them "in our face" but the truth is that to forget to beg to make the same mistake again. In this case, even learning to forgive is not a possibility. Though many years ago, it screams as though it was yesterday and in many places it is still going on today. People murdered because of their race or religion, one feeling that they are superior to another. I am glad to have grown up in a melting pot where my neighbors were so diverse that I never learned prejudice, as it is an evil way of addressing our fellow man. Thank you for this bold "in your face" reminder of those things that are very much a part of our world and the atrocities that we must never forget. Wonderful to see you posting again, Lisa!!
Take care,
Sherry
