 Old Farm House

All is the same except the color
of the paint-
The smokey ceilings tower way up high-
Tiles that were broken then; Still
need to be replaced today-
I can hear that old striped cat
pawing at the back door; Surely he’s
on his 9th life by now-

Our eyes met as we passed in
the doorway-
Me headed for the bedside chair-
You headed outside for a smoke-
No words were needed; The house speaks
loud enough for all to hear-
The day is cloudy; As muddled as
our eyes filled with tiredness

The stovepipe whines as the cold wind
finds its weaknesses;
and mine-
I pull the blanket up over my shoulders,
and listen intently for your next
breath-
or at the least; Those silent tones
of eternity

Flakes of dried paint, in a plethora of
hues, lay forgotten in the
window sill-
I begin to search my mind for the
time they were fresh and vibrant-
As full of life as you once were-
Me and this old farm house needs to hear
your laughter; Feel your warmth; Smell
your cookies baking for the Grandchildren;
We need that;
We need that and so much more

I look around and wonder just
how many times this old house has heard,
the cries of mourners left behind-
Felt the unsettling of a broken heart?
Noticed the frown on a grandchild’s face?
Been the den of angst and anger, when
darkness found them alone for the very
first night?
I wonder if it weeps as well?

All is the same except for the color
of the paint-
The ceilings tower way up high-
Tiles that were broken then, still
needs to be replaced today-
I no longer hear that old striped cat
pawing at the door-

*silence*

Is it not strange how a house can have a personality and a spirit of its own; softened and honed by the temperments of those who have lived within its walls? As much as feeling the echoes of those who we loved hovering there, we feel the continuing energy of the structure, the way we always felt protected there and the way that our own memories have been absorbed by the structure itself. Never will we tread there and not become again, the person we were when we dwelled there. Rich poem, Lisa. Very well done.
Take care,
Sherry

Your work here beats with a heart of it's own, following the life and breath of your memories and your thoughts. The images dance through the readers's mind and fill them with the same sense of wonder as you experience and though a little sad it still manages to fill the reader with a sense of belonging. Well done Lisa,

Fee

The ghosts of the past live in the walls, the paint chips, their biographies...and their calling cards.

I enjoyed this very much.

This is a poignant slice of life, a dignified old farmhouse, a life full of remarkable memories both happy and sad -- you did a wonderful job carrying your readers forth on their journey -- a journey I have enjoyed very much. Excellent poem, Lisa!

Dear Lisa:

Oh that silence at the end takes my breath away. Silent minutes, hours represent lifetimes that can't be filled. Beautiful poem.

Lisa,

If only Old Houses were our ears and eyes instead of our hearts. Your poem paints a very sad story but also a caché of memories.
