Poem Artwork

Shuga

Cherrie Lynn with eyes deep blue-
Kissed the boys cause she wanted too-
Made’m blush, oh yes she did-

They’d turn away with their faces hid

While Cherrie Lynn danced through
the halls-
It was Bobby Joe she wanted most
of all-
She’d drop her books right at his feet-
call him, Dumplin’ and Shuga Sweet

Of that Southern heritage she was proud-
talked real slow but above the crowd-
Born was Bobby, a city lad-
from ‘cross the tracks where they
raise’m bad

T-shirts and Tennis shoes; Dresses of
frilly lace-
Cherrie Lynn wanted Bobby; and he
wanted Cherrie Lynn;
but not for her pretty face

She’d tease and tickle, and make
Bobby sweat-
then she’d pull back just before

Their lips met-

Then before night fall; Bobby walked
away-
But not before making plans
to meet again the next
day-

In the pit of Bobby’s stomach; was like a
storm without rain-
As the police cuffed his hands; Said
they’d found his sweet Cherrie-
Found her raped and slain

Bobby Joe he hung his head; and
tears filled his eyes-
but every time he tried to speak;
they accused him of telling lies

He remembers well, Sweet Cherrie’s smell,
so rich and shuga sweet-
But Bobby Joe sits on death row-
with a heart that never beats

I didn't realize I had missed part one. I'm glad I came back and found it! Love the story! It reminds me a little of an old Doc Watson song "Tom Dooley"

"Shuga" Awww this ripped me right up.
Hope I was part of this inspiration...heeeheee Lisa.
As Felix writes I would like to know if Bobby did or someone else.
I surely don't want it to be Bobby is it?

Great write...waiting for the rest of the story..will it be?
All the best and thank you for your visits...thumbs up2ya'

This is a shocking love story to rival all the murder/mystery/love triangle stories of the ages. Think you should expound on this more and do at very least a short story for it sure teased my interest and made me want to know more. Well done piece for sure.

Your images come to life with this poem. This "might" be the start of a saga with more to be written????

Lisa,

Very abrupt ending to "sweet romance" I'm sure there are some on death row who will not be heard. People tend to jump to conclusions or form an opinion before the facts are ever presented.

I thought this was gonna be a Valentine but it turned out to be a tragedy. A forbidden love that was never meant to be, it is a story that has been written many times, but never better than this one, Lisa. Excellent work! This must be an old time tale, for today DNA would have freed him, though it would not have healed his broken heart.
Take care,
Sherry

What a marvelous beginning, and what a tragic end, Lisa. I think your poetic tale parallels many things in our tragic world today.

This poem started out so light and carefree, then all of a sudden it shocked me. It made me think of "Ode To Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry (1967), which tells the story of a guy who kills himself by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge. There really was a Tallahatchie Bridge in Greenwood, Mississippi, but Gentry made up the story.
