I wrote this poem for the graduating class of Lancaster (Ohio) High School in 1999. I also had the honor of delivering the graduation address to them.
Winner of the International Who's Who in Poetry Editor's Choice Award If You Believe You are the cast of the new generation With fresh hopes and inquiring minds, Who are called by Fate and your forebears To improve the conditions you find. The time is now, your Destiny awaits, Many roles are assigned to your care ~ To heal the sick, to build a bridge, or To bring hope where there is despair. The stage is set your skills are honed, The first act will soon begin; and As the curtain lifts, let your confidence rise It’s the trait most needed to win. So trust in yourself, forsake all doubts, Each of you, woman or man For you will succeed if you just try, and If you believe you can.

Go ahead, Judith, make my day. Actually, you just did. Many thanks for your kind comments. I feel a thousand percent better. Oh yes, all 600 students received a copy of that poem cleverly placed in their diploma folders.

WOW...almost three years have passed since you posted this one but I am just discovering it this morning. What a great message in poem form that should be read to ALL graduating classes. I'll bet the class you wrote this for still remembers your reading of it, and may have made life decisions because of it that they would have been too afraid to before hearing you read it for them. A very touching and meaningful writing.

Yes - wonderfully stated and hopefully imparted. Ten years after the prayer for these graduates still remain, and for others that followed them, for only the Power of God will protect them and their dreams from the corruption of this world.
