If Talent Were Contagious
If talent were contagious
I’d store all that I could gain
From Milton, Poe, and Shakespeare
And that fellow called Mark Twain.
I’d study every style and genre
I’d read twixt every line
In search of how their sleight of hand
Converts the simple to sublime.
No mark of punctuation
Would escape my eagle eye
I’d lift up every comma
I’d study every where and why.
What makes their words so special
What makes their thoughts unwind
Into heavenly streams of magic
That lifts the reader’s mind?
Alas, my days are numbered
The end will soon be here
My saddlebags are empty
My quest is in low gear.

You wrote with style and grace
Can you spare me just a moment
And help me win this race?
What’s the secret to your talent
How did you write so well
Can I find it in a bottle
Is it somewhere in your spell?
Believe that you can do it
I heard their voices say
Stop when you are satisfied
And then just walk away.
